Qual paura ho quando mi torna a menteA

MELANCHOLY RECOLLECTIONS AND PRESAGESB

O Laura when my tortured mindC
The sad remembrance bearsD
Of that ill omen'd dayE
When victim to a thousand doubts and fearsF
I left my soul behindC
That soul that could not from its partner strayE
In nightly visions to my longing eyesG
Thy form oft seems to riseG
As ever thou wert seenH
Fair like the rose 'midst paling flowers the queenH
But loosely in the windC
Unbraided wave the ringlets of thy hairI
That late with studious careI
I saw with pearls and flowery garlands twinedC
On thy wan lip no cheerful smile appearsF
Thy beauteous face a tender sadness wearsD
Placid in pain thou seem'st serene in griefJ
As conscious of thy fate and hopeless of reliefJ
Cease cease presaging heart O angels deignK
To hear my fervent prayer that all my fears be vainK

WOODHOUSELEEL

What dread I feel when I revolve the dayE
I left my mistress sad without reposeM
My heart too with her and my fond thought knowsM
Nought on which gladlier oft'ner it can stayE
Again my fancy doth her form portrayE
Meek among beauty's train like to some roseM
Midst meaner flowers nor joy nor grief she showsM
Not with misfortune prest but with dismayE
Then were thrown by her custom'd cheerfulnessM
Her pearls her chaplets and her gay attireN
Her song her laughter and her mild addressM
Thus doubtingly I quitted her I loveO
Now dark ideas dreams and bodings direP
Raise terrors which Heaven grant may groundless proveQ
