Il mal mi preme e mi spaventa il peggioA
-
TO A FRIEND IN LOVE LIKE HIMSELF HE CAN GIVE NO ADVICE BUT TO RAISE HIS SOUL TO GODB
-
-
Evil oppresses me and worse dismayC
To which a plain and ample way I findD
Driven like thee by frantic passion blindD
Urged by harsh thoughts I bend like thee my wayC
Nor know I if for war or peace to prayC
To war is ruin shame to peace assign'dD
But wherefore languish thus Rather resign'dD
Whate'er the Will Supreme ordains obeyC
However ill that honour me beseemC
By thee conferr'd whom that affection cheatsE
Which many a perfect eye to error swaysF
To raise thy spirit to that realm supremeC
My counsel is and win those blissful seatsE
For short the time and few the allotted daysF

The bad oppresses me the worse dismaysF
To which so broad and plain a path I seeG
My spirit to like frenzy led with theeG
Tried by the same hard thoughts in dotage straysF
Nor knows if peace or war of God it praysF
Though great the loss and deep the shame to meG
But why pine longer Best our lot will beG
What Heaven's high will ordains when man obeysF
Though I of that great honour worthless proveH
Offer'd by thee herein Love leads to errI
Who often makes the sound eye to see wrongA
My counsel this instant on Heaven aboveJ
Thy soul to elevate thy heart to spurK
For though the time be short the way is longA
