Chi fermato di menar sua vitaA
-
HE PRAYS GOD TO GUIDE HIS FRAIL BARK TO A SAFE PORTB
-
-
Who is resolved to venture his vain lifeC
On the deceitful wave and 'mid the rocksD
Alone unfearing death in little barkE
Can never be far distant from his endF
Therefore betimes he should return to portB
While to the helm yet answers his true sailG
-
The gentle breezes to which helm and sailG
I trusted entering on this amorous lifeC
And hoping soon to make some better portB
Have led me since amid a thousand rocksD
And the sure causes of my mournful endF
Are not alone without but in my barkE
-
Long cabin'd and confined in this blind barkE
I wander'd looking never at the sailG
Which prematurely bore me to my endF
Till He was pleased who brought me into lifeC
So far to call me back from those sharp rocksD
That distantly at last was seen my portB
-
As lights at midnight seen in any portB
Sometimes from the main sea by passing barkE
Save when their ray is lost 'mid storms or rocksD
So I too from above the swollen sailG
Saw the sure colours of that other lifeC
And could not help but sigh to reach my endF
-
Not that I yet am certain of that endF
For wishing with the dawn to be in portB
Is a long voyage for so short a lifeC
And then I fear to find me in frail barkE
Beyond my wishes full its every sailG
With the strong wind which drove me on those rocksD
-
Escape I living from these doubtful rocksD
Or if my exile have but a fair endF
How happy shall I be to furl my sailG
And my last anchor cast in some sure portB
But ah I burn and as some blazing barkE
So hard to me to leave my wonted lifeC
-
Lord of my end and master of my lifeC
Before I lose my bark amid the rocksD
Direct to a good port its harass'd sailG
-
