Se 'l pensier che mi struggeA
-
HE SEEKS IN VAIN TO MITIGATE HIS WOEB
-
-
Oh that my cheeks were taughtC
By the fond wasting thoughtC
To wear such hues as could its influence speakA
Then the dear scornful fairD
Might all my ardour shareD
And where Love slumbers now he might awakeA
Less oft the hill and meadE
My wearied feet should treadF
Less oft perhaps these eyes with tears should streamG
If she who cold as snowB
With equal fire would glowB
She who dissolves me and converts to flameH
-
Since Love exerts his swayI
And bears my sense awayI
I chant uncouth and inharmonious songsJ
Nor leaves nor blossoms showB
Nor rind upon the boughK
What is the nature that thereto belongsJ
Love and those beauteous eyesL
Beneath whose shade he liesL
Discover all the heart can comprehendM
When vented are my caresN
In loud complaints and tearsN
These harm myself and others those offendM
-
Sweet lays of sportive veinO
Which help'd me to sustainO
Love's first assault the only arms I boreP
This flinty breast say whoQ
Shall once again subdueQ
That I with song may soothe me as beforeP
Some power appears to traceR
Within me Laura's faceR
Whispers her name and straight in verse I striveS
To picture her againT
But the fond effort's vainO
Me of my solace thus doth Fate depriveS
-
E'en as some babe untiesR
Its tongue in stammering guiseR
Who cannot speak yet will not silence keepU
So fond words I essayR
And listen'd be the layR
By my fair foe ere in the tomb I sleepU
But if of beauty vainO
She treats me with disdainO
Do thou O verdant shore attend my sighsR
Let them so freely flowB
That all the world may knowB
My sorrow thou at least didst not despiseR
-
And well art thou awareD
That never foot so fairD
The soil e'er press'd as that which trod thee lateV
My sunk soul and worn heartW
Now seek thee to impartW
The secret griefs that on my passion waitV
If on thy margent greenX
Or 'midst thy flowers were seenX
Some traces of her footsteps lingering thereD
My wearied life 'twould cheerY
Bitter'd with many a tearD
Ah now what means are left to soothe my careD
-
Where'er I bend mine eyeZ
What sweet serenityA2
I feel to think here Laura shone of yoreP
Each plant and scented bloomB2
I gather seems to comeC2
From where she wander'd on the custom'd shoreP
Ofttimes in this retreatD2
A fresh and fragrant seatD2
She found at least so fancy's vision showsR
And never let truth seekA
Th' illusion dear to breakA
O spirit blest from whom such magic flowsR
-
To thee my simple songA
No polish doth belongA
Thyself art conscious of thy little worthE2
Solicit not renownF2
Throughout the busy townF2
But dwell within the shade that gave thee birthE2
