Gentil mia donna i' veggioA
-
IN PRAISE OF LAURA'S EYES THEY LEAD HIM TO CONTEMPLATE THE PATH OF LIFEB
-
-
Lady in your bright eyesC
Soft glancing round I mark a holy lightD
Pointing the arduous way that heavenward liesC
And to my practised sightD
From thence where Love enthroned asserts his mightD
Visibly palpably the soul beams forthE
This is the beacon guides to deeds of worthF
And urges me to seek the glorious goalG
This bids me leave behind the vulgar throngA
Nor can the human tongueA
Tell how those orbs divine o'er all my soulG
Exert their sweet controlG
Both when hoar winter's frosts around are flungA
And when the year puts on his youth againH
Jocund as when this bosom first knew painI
-
Oh if in that high sphereJ
From whence the Eternal Ruler of the starsK
In this excelling work declared his mightD
All be as fair and brightD
Loose me from forth my darksome prison hereL
That to so glorious life the passage barsK
Then in the wonted tumult of my breastM
I hail boon Nature and the genial dayN
That gave me being and a fate so blestM
And her who bade hope beamO
Upon my soul for till then burthensomeO
Was life itself becomeO
But now elate with touch of self esteemO
High thoughts and sweet within that heart ariseC
Of which the warders are those beauteous eyesC
-
No joy so exquisiteP
Did Love or fickle Fortune ere deviseC
In partial mood for favour'd votariesC
But I would barter itQ
For one dear glance of those angelic eyesC
Whence springs my peace as from its living rootR
O vivid lustre of power absoluteR
O'er all my being source of that delightD
By which consumed I sink a willing preyN
As fades each lesser rayN
Before your splendour more intense and brightD
So to my raptured heartS
When your surpassing sweetness you impartS
No other thought of feeling may remainI
Where you with Love himself despotic reignI
-
All sweet emotions e'erT
By happy lovers felt in every climeO
Together all may not with mine compareU
When as from time to timeO
I catch from that dark radiance rich and deepV
A ray in which disporting Love is seenW
And I believe that from my cradled sleepV
By Heaven provided this resource hath beenX
'Gainst adverse fortune and my nature frailY
Wrong'd am I by that veilY
And the fair hand which oft the light eclipseC
That all my bliss hath wroughtZ
And whence the passion struggling on my lipsC
Both day and night to vent the breast o'erfraughtZ
Still varying as I read her varying thoughtZ
-
For that with pain I findZ
Not Nature's poor endowments may aloneA2
Render me worthy of a look so kindZ
I strive to raise my mindZ
To match with the exalted hopes I ownA2
And fires though all engrossing pure as mineB2
If prone to good averse to all things baseC
Contemner of what worldlings covet mostZ
I may become by long self disciplineC2
Haply this humble boastZ
May win me in her fair esteem a placeC
For sure the end and aimO
Of all my tears my sorrowing heart's sole claimO
Were the soft trembling of relenting eyesC
The generous lover's last best dearest prizeC
-
My lay thy sister song is gone beforeD2
And now another in my teeming brainI
Prepares itself whence I resume the strainI
-
