Perch quel che mi trasse ad amar primaA
-
HE WILL ALWAYS LOVE HER THOUGH DENIED THE SIGHT OF HERB
-
-
Though cruelty denies my viewC
Those charms which led me first to loveD
To passion yet will I be trueC
Nor shall my will rebellious proveE
Amid the curls of golden hairF
That wave those beauteous temples roundG
Cupid spread craftily the snareF
With which my captive heart he boundG
And from those eyes he caught the rayH
Which thaw'd the ice that fenced my breastI
Chasing all other thoughts awayH
With brightness suddenly imprestI
But now that hair of sunny gleamJ
Ah me is ravish'd from my sightI
Those beauteous eyes withdraw their beamJ
And change to sadness past delightI
A glorious death by all is prizedI
Tis death alone shall break my chainK
Oh be Love's timid wail despisedI
Lovers should nobly suffer painK
-
NOTTI
-
Though barr'd from all which led me first to loveD
By coldness or capriceL
Not yet from its firm bent can passion ceaseL
The snare was set amid those threads of goldI
To which Love bound me fastI
And from those bright eyes melted the long coldI
Within my heart that pass'dI
So sweet the spell their sudden splendour castI
Its single memory stillM
Deprives my soul of every other willM
But now alas from me of that fine hairF
Is ravish'd the dear sightI
The lost light of those twin stars chaste as fairF
Saddens me in her flightI
But since a glorious death wins honour brightI
By death and not through griefN
Love from such chain shall give at last reliefN
