Do you see this cup this tempting cupA
Its sparkle and its glowB
I tell you this cup has brought to meC
A world of shame and woeB
-
Do you see that woman sad and wanD
One day with joy and prideE
With orange blossoms in her hairF
I claimed her as my brideE
-
And vowed that I would faithful proveG
Till death our lives should partH
I've drenched her soul with floods of griefI
And almost crushed her heartH
-
Do you see that gray p haired mother bendJ
Beneath her weight of yearsK
I've filled that aged mother's eyesL
With many bitter tearsM
-
Year after year for me she praysN
And tries her child to saveO
I've almost brought her gray hairs downP
In sorrow to the graveO
-
Do you see that boy whose wistful eyesL
Are gazing on my faceQ
I've overshadowed his young lifeR
With sorrow and disgraceQ
-
He used to greet me with a smileS
His heart was light and gladT
I've seen him tremble at my voiceU
I've made that heart so sadT
-
Do you see this pledge I've signed to nightV
My mother wife and boyW
Shall read my purpose on that pledgeX
And smile through tears of joyW
-
To know this night this very nightV
I cast the wine p cup downP
And from the dust of a sinful lifeR
Lift up my manhood's crownP
-
The faded face of my young wifeR
With roses yet shall bloomY
And joy shall light my mother's eyesL
On the margin of the tombY
-
I have vowed to p night my only boyW
With brow so fair and mileS
Shall not be taunted on the streetsZ
And called a drunkard's childA2
-
Never again shall that young faceQ
Whiten with grief and dreadB2
Because I've madly staggered homeC2
And sold for drink his breadB2
-
This strong right arm unnerved by rumD2
Shall battle with my fateE2
And peace and comfort crown the homeC2
By drink made desolateF2
-
Like a drowning man tempest p tossedG2
Clings to a rocky ledgeX
With trembling hands I've learned to graspH2
The gospel and the pledgeX
-
A captive bounding from my chainI2
I've rent each hateful bandJ2
And by the help of grace divineK2
A victor hope to standJ2
