Say not the age is hard and coldA
I think it brave and grandB
When men of diverse sects and creedsC
Are clasping hand in handB
-
The Parsee from his sacred firesD
Beside the Christian kneelsD
And clearer light to Islam's eyesD
The word of Christ revealsD
-
The Brahmin from his distant homeE
Brings thoughts of ancient loreF
The Bhuddist breaking bonds of casteG
Divides mankind no moreF
-
The meek eyed sons of far CathayH
Are welcome round the boardI
Not greed nor malice drives awayH
These children of our LordI
-
And Judah from whose trusted handsD
Came oracles divineJ
Now sits with those around whose heartsD
The light of God doth shineJ
-
Japan unbars her long sealed gatesD
From islands far awayH
Her sons are lifting up their eyesD
To greet the coming dayH
-
The Indian child from forests wildK
Has learned to read and prayH
The tomahawk and scalping knifeL
From him have passed awayH
-
From centuries of servile toilM
The Negro finds releaseD
And builds the fanes of prayer and praiseD
Unto the God of PeaceD
-
England and Russia face to faceD
With Central Asia meetN
And on the far Pacific coastO
Chinese and natives greetN
-
Crusaders once with sword and shieldP
The Holy Land to saveQ
From Moslem hands did strive to clutchR
The dear Redeemer's graveQ
-
A battle greater grander farS
Is for the present ageT
A crusade for the rights of manU
To brighten history's pageT
-
Where labor faints and bows her headV
And want consorts with crimeW
Or men grown faithless sadly sayH
That evil is the timeW
-
There is the field the vantage groundX
For every earnest heartY
To side with justice truth and rightZ
And act a noble partY
-
To save from ignorance and viceD
The poorest humblest childK
To make our age the fairest oneA2
On which the sun has smiledK
-
To plant the roots of coming yearsD
In mercy love and truthB2
And bid our weary saddened earthC2
Again renew her youthB2
-
Oh earnest hearts toil on in hopeD2
'Till darkness shrinks from lightZ
To fill the earth with peace and joyE2
Let youth and age uniteZ
-
To stay the floods of sin and shameF2
That sweep from shore to shoreF
And furl the banners stained with bloodG2
'Till war shall be no moreF
-
Blame not the age nor think it fullH2
Of evil and unrestI2
But say of every other ageT
This one shall be the bestI2
-
The age to brighten every pathJ2
By sin and sorrow trodK2
For loving hearts to usher inL2
The commonwealth of GodK2
