Go work in my vineyard said the LordA
And gather the bruised grainB
But the reapers had left the stubble bareC
And I trod the soil in painB
-
The fields of my Lord are wide and broadD
He has pastures fair and greenE
And vineyards that drink the golden lightF
Which flows from the sun's bright sheenE
-
I heard the joy of the reapers' songG
As they gathered golden grainB
Then wearily turned unto my taskH
With a lonely sense of painB
-
Sadly I turned from the sun's fierce glareC
And sought the quiet shadeI
And over my dim and weary eyesJ
Sleep's peaceful fingers strayedI
-
I dreamed I joined with a restless throngG
Eager for pleasure and gainB
But ever and anon a stumbler fellK
And uttered a cry of painB
-
But the eager crowd still hurried onL
Too busy to pause or heedM
When a voice rang sadly through my soulN
You must staunch these wounds that bleedM
-
My hands were weak but I reached them outO
To feebler ones than mineP
And over the shadows of my lifeQ
Stole the light of a peace divineP
-
Oh then my task was a sacred thingR
How precious it grew in my eyesJ
'Twas mine to gather the bruised grainB
For the Lord of ParadiseS
-
And when the reapers shall lay their grainB
On the floors of golden lightF
I feel that mine with its broken sheavesT
Shall be precious in His sightF
-
Though thorns may often pierce my feetU
And the shadows still abideV
The mists will vanish before His smileW
There will be light at eventideV
