Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JBKB LBMB NOIO PQRQ SSTS SESL USSSThe treacherous sands had caught our boat | A |
And held it with a strong embrace | B |
And death at our imprisoned crew | C |
Was sternly looking face to face | B |

With anxious hearts but failing strength | D |
We strove to push the boat from shore | E |
But all in vain for there we lay | F |
With bated breath and useless oar | E |

Around us in a fearful storm | G |
The fiery hail fell thick and fast | H |
And we engirded by the sand | I |
Could not return the dreadful blast | H |

When one arose upon whose brow | J |
The ardent sun had left his trace | B |
A noble purpose strong and high | K |
Uplighting all his dusky face | B |
- | |
Perchance within that fateful hour | L |
The wrongs of ages thronged apace | B |
But with it came the glorious hope | M |
Of swift deliverance to his race | B |
- | |
Of galling chains asunder rent | N |
Of severed hearts again made one | O |
Of freedom crowning all the land | I |
Through battles gained and victories won | O |
- | |
Some one our hero firmly said | P |
Must die to get us out of this | Q |
Then leaped upon the strand and bared | R |
His bosom to the bullets' hiss | Q |
- | |
But ye are soldiers and can fight | S |
May win in battles yet unfought | S |
I have no offering but my life | T |
And if they kill me it is nought | S |

With steady hands he grasped the boat | S |
And boldly pushed it from the shore | E |
Then fell by rebel bullets pierced | S |
His life work grandly nobly o'er | L |

Our boat was rescued from the sands | U |
And launched in safety on the tide | S |
But he our comrade good and grand | S |
In our defence had bravely died | S |
