A Story Of The Rebellion Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JBKB LBMB NOIO PQRQ SSTS SESL USSS

The treacherous sands had caught our boatA
And held it with a strong embraceB
And death at our imprisoned crewC
Was sternly looking face to faceB
-
With anxious hearts but failing strengthD
We strove to push the boat from shoreE
But all in vain for there we layF
With bated breath and useless oarE
-
Around us in a fearful stormG
The fiery hail fell thick and fastH
And we engirded by the sandI
Could not return the dreadful blastH
-
When one arose upon whose browJ
The ardent sun had left his traceB
A noble purpose strong and highK
Uplighting all his dusky faceB
-
Perchance within that fateful hourL
The wrongs of ages thronged apaceB
But with it came the glorious hopeM
Of swift deliverance to his raceB
-
Of galling chains asunder rentN
Of severed hearts again made oneO
Of freedom crowning all the landI
Through battles gained and victories wonO
-
Some one our hero firmly saidP
Must die to get us out of thisQ
Then leaped upon the strand and baredR
His bosom to the bullets' hissQ
-
But ye are soldiers and can fightS
May win in battles yet unfoughtS
I have no offering but my lifeT
And if they kill me it is noughtS
-
With steady hands he grasped the boatS
And boldly pushed it from the shoreE
Then fell by rebel bullets piercedS
His life work grandly nobly o'erL
-
Our boat was rescued from the sandsU
And launched in safety on the tideS
But he our comrade good and grandS
In our defence had bravely diedS
