Only a little scrap of blueA
Preserved with loving careB
But earth has not a brilliant hueA
To me more bright and fairB
-
Strong drink like a raging demonC
Laid on my heart his handD
When my darling joined with othersE
The Loyal Legion bandD
-
The Temperance BandD
-
But mystic angels called awayF
My loved and precious childG
And o'er life's dark and stormy wayF
Swept waves of anguish wildG
-
This badge of the Loyal LegionC
We placed upon her breastH
As she lay in her little coffinI
Taking her last sweet restH
-
To wear that badge as a tokenC
She earnestly did craveJ
So we laid it on her bosomK
To wear it in the graveJ
-
Where sorrow would never reach herL
Nor harsh words smite her earM
Nor her eyes in death dimmed slumberL
Would ever shed a tearB
-
What means this badge said her fatherL
Whom we had tried to saveJ
Who said when we told her storyN
Don't put it in the graveJ
-
We took the badge from her bosomK
And laid it on a chairB
And men by drink deludedO
Knelt by that badge in prayerB
-
And vowed in that hour of sorrowP
From drink they would abstainQ
And this little badge became the wedgeR
Which broke their galling chainQ
-
And lifted the gloomy shadowsS
That overspread my lifeT
And flooding my home with gladnessS
Made me a happy wifeT
-
And this is why this scrap of blueA
Is precious in my sightU
It changed my sad and gloomy homeV
From darkness into lightU
