Where hath not a woman stoodA
Strong in affection's might a reed upborneB
By an o'er mastering currentC
-
GENTLE and lovely formD
What didst thou hereE
When the fierce battle stormD
Bore down the spearF
-
Banner and shiver'd crestG
Beside thee strownB
Tell that amidst the bestG
Thy work was doneB
-
Yet strangely sadly fairH
O'er the wild sceneB
Gleams through its golden hairH
That brow sereneB
-
Low lies the stately headI
Earth bound the freeJ
How gave those haughty deadI
A place to theeJ
-
SlumbererJ
thineB
early bierJ
Friends should have crown'dK
Many a flower and tearJ
Shedding aroundK
-
Soft voices clear and youngL
Mingling their swellM
Should o'er thy dust have sungL
Earth's last farewellM
-
Sisters above the graveN
Of thy reposeO
Should have bid violets waveN
With the white roseO
-
How must the trumpet's noteP
Savage and shrillQ
For requiem o'er thee floatP
Thou fair and stillQ
-
And the swift charger sweepR
In full careerJ
Trampling thy place of sleepR
Why camest thou hereJ
-
Why ask the true heart whyS
Woman hath beenB
Ever where brave men dieS
Unshrinking seenB
-
Unto this harvest groundK
Proud reapers cameT
Some for that stirring soundK
A warrior's nameT
-
Some for the stormy playU
And joy of strifeV
And some to fling awayU
A weary lifeV
-
But thou pale sleeper thouW
With the slight frameT
And the rich locks whose glowX
Death cannot tameT
-
Only one thought one powerJ
-
TheeJ
could have ledI
So through the tempest's hourJ
To lift thy headI
-
Only the true the strongY
The love whose trustZ
Woman's deep soul too longY
Pours on the dustZ
