THOU bright Futurity whose prospect beamsA
In dawning radiance on our day light dreamsA
Whose lambent meteors and ethereal formsB
Gild the dark clouds and glitter thro' the stormsB
On thy broad canvas fancy loves to traceC
Her brilliant Iris drest in vivid graceC
Paints fair creations in celestial dyesD
Tints of the morn and blushes of the skiesD
And bids her scenes perfection's robe assumeE
The mingling flush of light and life and bloomE
Thou bright Futurity whose morning starF
Still beams unveil'd unclouded from afarF
Whose lovely vista smiling Hope surveysG
Thro' the dim twilight of the silvery hazeG
-
Oh let the muse expand her wing on highH
Thy shadowy realms thy worlds unknown descryF
Let her clear eye beam flashing lucid lightI
Chase from thy forms th' involving shades of nightI
Pierce the dark clouds that veil thy noontide raysG
And soar exulting in meridian blazeG
In bliss in grief thy radiant scenes bestowJ
The zest of rapture or the balm of woeJ
For as the sun flower to her idol turnsK
Glows in his noon and kindles as he burnsK
Expands her bosom to th' exalting fireF
Lives but to gaze and gazes to admireF
E'en so to thee the mind incessant fliesD
From thy pure source the fount of joy suppliesD
And steals from thee the sunny light that throwsL
A brighter blush on pleasure's living roseL
To thee pale sorrow turns her eye of tearsM
Lifts the dim curtain of unmeasur'd yearsN
And hails thy promis'd land th' Elysian shoreF
Where weeping virtue shall bewail no moreF
-
Now while the sounds of martial wrath assailO
While the red banner floats upon the galeO
While dark destruction with his legion bandsP
Waves the bright sabre o'er devoted landsP
While war's dread comet flashes thro' the airF
And fainting nations tremble at the glareF
To thee Futurity from scenes like theseQ
Pale fancy turns for heav'n imparted easeQ
Turns to behold in thy unclouded skiesD
The orb of peace in bright perspective riseD
And pour around with joy diffusing rayF
Life light and glory in a flood of dayF
-
Thou whose lov'd presence and benignant smileR
Has beam'd effulgence on this favour'd isleR
Thou the fair seraph in immortal stateS
Thron'd on the rainbow heaven's emblazon'd gateS
Thou whose mild whispers in the summer breezeQ
Control the storm and undulate the seasQ
-
Spirit of mercy oh return to bringT
Palm in thy wreath and 'healing on thy wing '-
Compose each passion to th' eternal willU
Say to the hurricane of war 'Be still '-
'Vengeance expire thy reign ambition ceaseV
Beam light of heaven triumphant star of peace '-
-
Is this the muse's wild illusive dreamW
An airy picture an ideal themeW
Shall death still ride victorious o'er the slainX
And his 'pale charges' desolate the plainX
Ne'er shall revenge her vulture pinion foldY
Close her dark eye her lightning arm withhold '-
-
Still must oppression cause th' eternal strifeZ
And breathe dire mildew o'er the blooms of lifeZ
Must war still ravage with his car of fireF
And victim myriads in the blaze expireF
-
Supernal Pow'r on suffering earth look downA2
Tyrannic might shall perish in thy frownA2
-
Oh deign to speed that blest appointed timeB2
When peace and faith shall smile on ev'ry climeB2
But first in clouds the dark eventful dayF
Of wrath avenging wrath must roll awayF
Thy sword oh Justice o'er the world must waveC2
Ere mercy dawn to triumph and to saveC2
-
Shades of the prophet bards majestic trainX
Who seiz'd the harp from Inspiration's faneX
And fir'd and guided by divine controlD2
Woke ev'ry chord to rapture and to soulD2
Shades of the prophet bards in days of oldY
Whose gifted hands the leaf of fate unroll'dY
Whose prescient eyes undimm'd by age or tearsM
Explor'd the avenue of distant yearsN
Did those blest eyes th' enchanted scene surveyF
Of smiling concord's universal swayF
And did your hearts with joy exulting burnE2
To see her Paradise on earth returnE2
-
Yes hallow'd seers to you the bliss was givenF2
To read unveil'd the dread decrees of heavenF2
You saw th' oppressor's might in judgment hurl'dY
A storm of vengeance on the guilty worldY
Beheld his throne revers'd his empire pastY
And peace and joy descend serene at lastY
-
So when impetuous winds forget to raveC2
And sun set radiance trembles o'er the waveC2
Sweet Eve advancing o'er the summer deepG2
Charms every billow ev'ry breeze to sleepG2
-
Dawn age of bliss but e'er thy morn shall riseD
And waft a train of cherubs from the skiesD
The foes of man who mark their deathful wayF
With tears of blood and earthquakes of dismayF
These these must fall a desolating bandY
Fall by the darts in Retribution's handY
And tyrants vanquish'd humbled in the dustY
Kneel at her shrine and own the sentence justY
-
Then wave oh Albion wave thy sword againH2
Call thy brave champions to the battle plainX
Rise might of nations ardent to opposeL
The rushing torrent of unpitying foesL
Soon shall they own that freedom's cause inspiresI2
Undaunted spirit and resistless firesJ2
Rise all combin'd 'in arms in heart the same '-
The arms of honor and the heart of flameB2
Nor check th' avenging sword the patriot spearF
Till stern Ambition falls in mid careerF
Then let the falchion sleep the combat ceaseV
The sun of conquest light the path of peaceV
Let the green laurel with the palm entwineK2
And rear on trophies bright her firm eternal shrineK2
-
Dawn age of bliss the wounds of discord closeL2
Furl the red standard bid the sword reposeL
Then o'er the globe let worshipp'd freedom smileR
Bright as in Albion's truth illumin'd isleR
Her Grecian temple rear on every shoreF
Where every knee shall bend and heart adoreF
-
Queen of the valiant arm the warrior breastY
Light of the ocean day star of the westY
Oh Albion Liberty's immortal faneX
Empress of isles palladium of the mainX
Tho' thy loud thunders thro' the world resoundY
Tho' thy red lightnings flash victorious roundY
Tho' nations own in many a distant climeB2
Thy arm triumphant as thy name sublimeB2
Rock of the waves tho' proud from zone to zoneM2
Extend the pillars of thy naval throneM2
Around thy coast tho' wild destruction roarsN2
Yet calm and fertile smile thy favor'd shoresN2
In emerald verdure blooms thy sunny plainX
And the dark war blast rolls without in vainX
Tho' flames of valor kindling in thine eyeH
Brave every storm and every foe defyH
Yet soft beneath its milder beam sereneO2
Luxuriance blossoms o'er the glowing sceneO2
Fair laugh thy vales no deathful sounds assailO
Mirth warbles free and music swells the galeO
-
While firm in might thy victor arm extendsP2
Death to thy foes and succour to thy friendsP2
-
Thus potent Prospero's creative spellQ2
Bade the wild surge in mountain fury swellQ2
Call'd up the spirits of the raging deepG2
Arous'd the whirlwind o'er the waves to sweepG2
But on th' enchanted isle his fair domainX
Rais'd the bright vision of the sylphid trainX
And bade soft notes and fairy warbled airsM
Melt o'er the sense and lull corroding caresM
-
Yet Queen of Isles tho' peace with angel formB2
Smile on thy cliffs regardless of the stormB2
Favor'd of heaven e'en thou tho' distant farF
Hast wept the horrors of relentless warF
E'en thou hast mourn'd o'er many a hero's bierF
Grac'd with thy laurels hallow'd with thy tearF
For those whose arms whose blood preserv'd thee freeF
Who would not bleed O peerless isle for theeF
-
For those who falling on their subject waveC2
Made the dark billow glory's proudest graveC2
How oft has anguish taught thy tears to flowJ
Thy sighs despondence and thine accents woeJ
-
Yes thou hast mourn'd the brave illustrious deadY
Martyrs for thee by faith and valor ledY
When he the warrior of the patriot glowJ
Whose ebbing life blood stain'd Canadian snowJ
When thy own Wolfe by all thy spirit fir'dY
Triumphant fought exulted and expir'dY
Gave to thy fame the last the lingering breathR2
The joy in agony the smile in deathR2
How swell'd thy heart with blended feeling's tideY
How sorrow paled the kindling cheek of pF
