The Sea king woke from the troubled sleepA
Of a vision haunted nightB
And he look'd from his bark o'er the gloomy deepA
And counted the streaks of lightB
For the red sun's earliest rayC
Was to rouse his bands that dayC
To the stormy joy of fightB
-
But the dreams of rest were still on earthD
And the silent stars on highE
And there wav'd not the smoke of one cabin hearthF
'Midst the quiet of the skyE
And along the twilight bayC
In their sleep the hamlets layC
For they knew not the Norse were nighE
-
The Sea king look'd o'er the brooding waveG
He turn'd to the dusky shoreH
And there seem'd through the arch of a tide worn caveG
A gleam as of snow to pourH
And forth in watery lightB
Mov'd phantoms dimly whiteB
Which the garb of woman boreH
-
Slowly they mov'd to the billow sideI
And the forms as they grew more clearJ
Seem'd each on a tall pale steed to rideI
And a shadowy crest to rearJ
And to beckon with faint handK
From the dark and rocky strandK
And to point a gleaming spearJ
-
Then a stillness on his spirit fellL
Before th' unearthly trainM
For he knew Valhalla's daughters wellL
The choosers of the slainM
And a sudden rising breezeN
Bore across the moaning seasN
To his ear their thrilling strainM
-
'There are songs in Odin's HallO
For the brave ere night to fallO
Doth the great sun hide his rayC
He must bring a wrathful dayC
Sleeps the falchion in its sheathP
Swords must do the work of deathQ
Regner sea king thee we callO
There is joy in Odin's HallO
-
'At the feast and in the songR
Thou shalt be remember'd longR
By the green isles of the floodS
Thou hast left thy track in bloodS
On the earth and on the seaT
There are those will speak of theeT
'Tis enough the war gods callO
There is mead in Odin's HallO
-
'Regner tell thy fair hair'd brideI
She must slumber at thy sideI
Tell the brother of thy breastU
Ev'n for him thy grave hath restU
Tell the raven steed which bore theeT
When the wild wolf fled before theeT
He too with his lord must fallO
There is room in Odin's HallO
-
'Lo the mighty sun looks forthV
Arm thou leader of the northV
Lo the mists of twilight flyE
We must vanish thou must dieE
By the sword and by the spearJ
By the hand that knows not fearJ
Sea king nobly shalt thou fallO
There is joy in Odin's Hall '-
-
There was arming heard on land and waveG
When afar the sunlight spreadW
And the phantom forms of the tide worn caveG
With the mists of morning fledW
But at eve the kingly handK
Of the battle axe and brandK
Lay cold on a pile of deadW
