The Sea king woke from the troubled sleep	A
Of a vision haunted night	B
And he look'd from his bark o'er the gloomy deep	A
And counted the streaks of light	B
For the red sun's earliest ray	C
Was to rouse his bands that day	C
To the stormy joy of fight	B

But the dreams of rest were still on earth	D
And the silent stars on high	E
And there wav'd not the smoke of one cabin hearth	F
'Midst the quiet of the sky	E
And along the twilight bay	C
In their sleep the hamlets lay	C
For they knew not the Norse were nigh	E
	-
The Sea king look'd o'er the brooding wave	G
He turn'd to the dusky shore	H
And there seem'd through the arch of a tide worn cave	G
A gleam as of snow to pour	H
And forth in watery light	B
Mov'd phantoms dimly white	B
Which the garb of woman bore	H
	-
Slowly they mov'd to the billow side	I
And the forms as they grew more clear	J
Seem'd each on a tall pale steed to ride	I
And a shadowy crest to rear	J
And to beckon with faint hand	K
From the dark and rocky strand	K
And to point a gleaming spear	J

Then a stillness on his spirit fell	L
Before th' unearthly train	M
For he knew Valhalla's daughters well	L
The choosers of the slain	M
And a sudden rising breeze	N
Bore across the moaning seas	N
To his ear their thrilling strain	M

For the brave ere night to fall	O
Doth the great sun hide his ray	C
He must bring a wrathful day	C
Sleeps the falchion in its sheath	P
