IF e'er for human bliss or woeA
I feel the sympathetic glowA
If e'er my heart has learn'd to knowA
The gen'rous wish or pray'rB
Who sow'd the germ with tender handC
Who mark'd its infant leaves expandC
My mother's fost'ring careD
-
And if one flow'r of charms refin'dE
May grace the garden of my mindE
'Twas she who nurs'd it thereD
She lov'd to cherish and adornF
Each blossom of the soilG
To banish ev'ry weed and thornF
That oft oppos'd her toilG
-
And oh if e'er I've sigh'd to claimH
The palm the living palm of fameH
The glowing wreath of praiseI
If e'er I've wish'd the glitt'ring storesJ
That fortune on her fav'rite poursJ
'Twas but that wealth and fame if mineK
Round thee with streaming rays might shineK
And gild thy sun bright daysI
-
Yet not that splendor pomp and pow'rB
Might then irradiate ev'ry hourL
For these my mother well I knowA
On thee no raptures could bestowA
But could thy bounty warm and kindE
Be like thy wishes unconfin'dE
And fall as manna from the skiesM
And bid a train of blessings riseM
Diffusing joy and peaceN
The tear drop grateful pure and brightO
For thee would beam with softer lightO
-
Than all the diamond's crystal raysI
Than all the emerald's lucid blazeI
And joys of heav'n would thrill thy heartP
To bid one bosom grief departP
One tear one sorrow ceaseN
-
Then oh may heav'n that loves to blessQ
Bestow the pow'r to cheer distressQ
Make thee its minister belowA
To light the cloudy path of woeA
To visit the deserted cellR
Where indigence is doom'd to dwellR
To raise when drooping to the earthS
The blossoms of neglected worthS
And round with lib'ral hand dispenseT
The sunshine of beneficenceU
-
But ah if fate should still denyV
Delights like these too rich and highV
-
If grief and pain thy steps assailW
In life's remote and wintry valeW
Then as the wild Eolian lyreX
Complains with soft entrancing numberL
When the loud storm awakes the wireL
And bids enchantment cease to slumberL
So filial love with soothing voiceY
E'en then shall teach thee to rejoiceY
E'en then shall sweeter milder soundZ
When sorrow's tempest raves aroundZ
While dark misfortune's gales destroyA2
The frail mimosa buds of hope and joyA2
