To My Mother Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AAABCCD EEDFGFG HHIJJKKI BLAAEEMMNOO IIPPN QQAARRSSTU VV WWXLLLYYZZA2A2IF e'er for human bliss or woe | A |
I feel the sympathetic glow | A |
If e'er my heart has learn'd to know | A |
The gen'rous wish or pray'r | B |
Who sow'd the germ with tender hand | C |
Who mark'd its infant leaves expand | C |
My mother's fost'ring care | D |
- | |
And if one flow'r of charms refin'd | E |
May grace the garden of my mind | E |
'Twas she who nurs'd it there | D |
She lov'd to cherish and adorn | F |
Each blossom of the soil | G |
To banish ev'ry weed and thorn | F |
That oft oppos'd her toil | G |
- | |
And oh if e'er I've sigh'd to claim | H |
The palm the living palm of fame | H |
The glowing wreath of praise | I |
If e'er I've wish'd the glitt'ring stores | J |
That fortune on her fav'rite pours | J |
'Twas but that wealth and fame if mine | K |
Round thee with streaming rays might shine | K |
And gild thy sun bright days | I |
- | |
Yet not that splendor pomp and pow'r | B |
Might then irradiate ev'ry hour | L |
For these my mother well I know | A |
On thee no raptures could bestow | A |
But could thy bounty warm and kind | E |
Be like thy wishes unconfin'd | E |
And fall as manna from the skies | M |
And bid a train of blessings rise | M |
Diffusing joy and peace | N |
The tear drop grateful pure and bright | O |
For thee would beam with softer light | O |
- | |
Than all the diamond's crystal rays | I |
Than all the emerald's lucid blaze | I |
And joys of heav'n would thrill thy heart | P |
To bid one bosom grief depart | P |
One tear one sorrow cease | N |
- | |
Then oh may heav'n that loves to bless | Q |
Bestow the pow'r to cheer distress | Q |
Make thee its minister below | A |
To light the cloudy path of woe | A |
To visit the deserted cell | R |
Where indigence is doom'd to dwell | R |
To raise when drooping to the earth | S |
The blossoms of neglected worth | S |
And round with lib'ral hand dispense | T |
The sunshine of beneficence | U |
- | |
But ah if fate should still deny | V |
Delights like these too rich and high | V |
- | |
If grief and pain thy steps assail | W |
In life's remote and wintry vale | W |
Then as the wild Eolian lyre | X |
Complains with soft entrancing number | L |
When the loud storm awakes the wire | L |
And bids enchantment cease to slumber | L |
So filial love with soothing voice | Y |
E'en then shall teach thee to rejoice | Y |
E'en then shall sweeter milder sound | Z |
When sorrow's tempest raves around | Z |
While dark misfortune's gales destroy | A2 |
The frail mimosa buds of hope and joy | A2 |
