From the bright stars or from the viewless airA
Or from some world unreached by human thoughtB
Spirit sweet spirit if thy home be thereA
And if thy visions with the past be fraughtB
Answer me answer meC
-
Have we not communed here of life and deathD
Have we not said that love such love as oursE
Was not to perish as a rose's breathD
To melt away like song from festal bowersE
Answer me answer meC
-
Thine eye's last light was mine the soul thtat shoneF
Intensely mournfully through gathering hazeG
Didst thou bear with thee to the shore unknownF
Nought of what lived in that long earnest gazeG
Hear hear and answer meC
-
Thy voice its low soft fervent farewell toneF
Thrilled through the tempest of the parting strifeH
Like a faint breeze oh from that music flownF
Send backI
oneJ
sound if love's be quenchless lifeH
But once oh answer meC
-
In the still noontide in the sunset's hushK
In the dead hour of night when thought grows deepL
When the heart's phantoms from the darkness rushK
Fearfully beautiful to strive with sleepL
Spirit then answer meC
-
By the remembrance of our blended prayerA
By all our tears whose mingling made them sweetM
By our last hope the victor o'er despairA
Speak if our souls in deathless yearnings meetM
Answer me answer meC
-
The grave is silent and the far off skyN
And the deep midnight silent all and loneF
Oh if thy buried love make no replyN
What voice has earth Hear pity speak mine ownF
Answer me answer meC
