OCTOBER tho' thy rugged browA
No vivid wreaths entwineB
Tho' not for thee the zephyr blowC
Tho' not for thee the blossom glowC
Or skies unclouded shineB
-
Tho' o'er thy dark and russet vestD
No rainbow colors playE
Tho' dim thine eye tho' cold thy breastD
Yet be thou honor'd be thou blestD
E'en more than youthful MayE
-
No vernal suns illume thy dayE
Fair star of joy then brighter beamF
No forest notes attend thy wayE
Then strike the lyre then make the layE
To one inspiring themeF
-
Thy steps may blight the roseate plainG
Thy winds may chill the valeH
Yet blooming 'midst thy shadowy trainG
One radiant morn adorns thy reignG
Hail dark October hailH
-
Thine is the day to Britons dearI
That bids fair Albion dry the tearJ
With myrtles wreath her victor spearI
And ev'ry grief disownK
Oh let a people's voice prolongL
Proud Loyalty's triumphal songL
And faith and truth and valor throngL
Around Britannia's throneK
-
That still their monarch's heart may feelM
How sweet affections grateful zealM
Still kindle with the patriot flameN
And 'glory in a Briton's name '-
O name by deeds emblazon'd highO
O name exalted to the skyO
O name ennobled by the freeP
Thou sacred sovereign worthy theeP
-
Then wake fairest Albion awake to rejoiceQ
To the P an of rapture attuning thy voiceQ
And suspending thy war song awhileR
Thou hast mourn'd for the great thou hast wept o'er the braveS
Thou hast bent in despair o'er the Patriot's graveS
But now from thy bosom repressing the sighO
Dispelling the tear from thy sun darting eyeO
Let ecstacy dawn in thy smileR
-
Yet the storm is around thee the hurricane roarsT
But Freedom and Loyalty dwell on thy shoresT
Defending a Monarch ador'dU
-
They are true they are dauntless their bosoms are mailH
In vain may Ambition their fortress assailH
And bright is their streamer that plays on the breezeV
And crimsons the wave as it floats o'er the seasV
And keen is their fire flashing swordU
Thy oak shall be firm till the tempest is pastW
Majestic it rises disdaining the blastW
It is proud independent supremeF
The nations around thee are cheerless in nightX
And hope has extinguished her quivering lightX
But the sun beam of heaven on thy bosom shall restD
And the planet of freedom be bright in the westD
Where its ray shall eternally streamF
-
Thou art like the fair vales with exuberance crown'dY
Embosom'd in Appenines cheerless aroundY
Where dwells Desolation aloneK
Thou art like the proud laurel still blooming and greenZ
When verdure and life have deserted the sceneZ
-
Thou art like a tall column unmoulder'd by timeA2
That rises 'midst ruins imperial sublimeA2
So firm is thy rock pillar'd throneK
-
Yet the storm is around thee the hurricane roarsT
But valor and loyalty dwell on thy shoresT
And long may the guardians remainG
Firm ardent intrepid oh long may they standB2
The sabre of justice and truth in their handB2
Then the fire flag of rapine may blaze thro' the airJ
The torch of invasion a comet may glareJ
And the war tempest threaten in vainG
-
O Monarch of Albion ador'd by the freeP
O temple of Liberty queen of the seaP
What Briton but worships your nameN
And where is the spirit that burns not with prideC2
For a country to freedom to glory alliedC2
And who would not kindle exulting in deathD2
And triumph and glow in resigning his breathD2
For a King for a land so exalted in fameN
-
Yes ye bands of noble fireE2
Dauntless on the plainG
Ye who firm in danger try'dC2
Thought on England ere ye diedC2
Mingling blood with Tajo's tideC2
Ye whose memory shall inspireF2
Many a bard and many a lyreF2
Songs of SpainG
-
Heroes of Corunna's fieldC2
Ye who perish'd thereJ
Be your names for ever dearI
Yes tho' dew'd with many a tearJ
Yet triumphal was your bierG2
Who like you the sword could wieldC2
Deathless trophies grace your shieldC2
Bright and fairJ
-
Ye who purchas'd ere ye fellH2
Talavera's crownI2
-
Sainted spirits of the braveS
Lo immortal o'er your graveS
Glory's amaranth shall waveS
Who your gallant deeds may tellH2
Who may ring your thrilling knellH2
High renownI2
-
Faithful friends who mourn sincereI
Where the brave reposeJ2
Cold and low the mighty sleepK2
Yes ye well may sadly weepK2
Well desponding vigils keepK2
Yet shall kindling pride be nearI
Yet shall triumph gild the tearJ
Love bestowsJ2
-
By the patriot's holy flameN
Of transcendent raysL2
Lyre by thy sublimest chordC2
Freedom by thy shrine ador'dC2
Honor by thy radiant swordC2
-
O'er the heroes lofty nameN
Shall the noon tide sun of fameN
Deathless blazeL2
-
Then let thy tear O Albion ShedC2
Its dew balm o'er the valiant deadC2
A tear so sad and yet so proudC2
But let the smile thine eye illumeN
But let thy cheek the smile resumeN
As the bright rainbow's vivid bloomN
Streams o'er the parting cloudC2
-
And form thy sovereign's brow to shadeC2
A diadem that shall not fadeC2
A wreath of glow eternalM2
And there the British oak may shineB
And there let Mercy's palm entwineB
And Science there her bays combineB
That ever shall be vernalM2
-
And come ye forms of towering mienZ
In graceful dignity sereneZ
Ye fearless guardians of the stateC2
Superior to the storms of fateC2
And round the British throne attendingN2
Its arms its fame its cause defendingN2
There firm in faith united standC2
Invincible immortal bandC2
Thou Freedom with the lightning eyeO
Be there unfurl thy flag on highO
And all thy mounting soul impartC2
And bid thy living flame expandC2
Warm bright ethereal o'er the landC2
Rise Freedom rise with all thy firesO2
When Britain's throne thine aid requiresO2
Come in thy proud refulgent carP2
Whose beam is Albion's guiding starP2
-
And wave that sabre dazzling brightC2
Pure hallow'd spotless as the lightC2
Whose ray for us a sun beam glowsJ2
Whose flash is lightning on our foesJ2
Be near majestic maid be nearI
Hope in thine eye and justice on thy spearI
-
And thou Fidelity thou angel formN
True in the combat stedfast in the stormN
Whose truth shall beam celestial constant pureQ2
And 'midst the fiery ordeal smile secureQ2
Thou with a cincture of Asbestos woveR2
Thou queen of friendship and thou guide of loveS2
Seraph be there impart thy sacred aidC2
Be there Britannia's glowing soul pervadeC2
Unite each heart by thy unchanging lawsT2
Firm loyal bold in one transcendent causeU2
-
Valor thou whose burning soulV2
Kindles mounts beyond controlV2
-
Thou whose ardor death defiesW2
Rushing to th' immortal prizeW2
Monarch of the conquering spearI
Dauntless on thy proud careerI
Stern defiance on thy crestC2
Melting mercy in thy breastC2
Thou with arms emblazon'd fairJ
King of Danger be thou thereJ
Bid thy votaries round thee throngL
Wake thy boldest martial songL
Sing in proud triumphant layE
Agincourt's victorious dayE
Sing the chief of Acre's fameN
Sing of Maida's brilliant nameN
Sing Vimeira's high renownI2
Talavera's recent crownI2
Be thou there With kindling eyeO
Peril toil and foes defyO
Raise thy beamy falchion highO
Wave thy banner to the skyO
-
Sound thy clarion thro' the airJ
Bid thy ardent sons be thereJ
Be their watch word in the fightC2
'Brunswick and Albion Liberty and Right '-
-
With thee be Fortitude whose awful mienZ
Tow'rs in the blast collected and sereneZ
Queen of the cliff thy look sublimely bravesX2
Fate's wint'ry blast affliction's mountain wavesX2
Thy lofty heart secure in ten fold mailH
Misfortune's arrows may in vain assailH
'Tis thine unchang'd to meet with proud disdainG
The spectre forms of danger and of painG
In glory's track undaunted to proceedC2
To smile and suffer to exult and bleedC2
Derive new spirit from the tempest rudeC2
And rise august exalted unsubdu'dC2
And thou fair Loyalty be still enshrin'dIn every manly heart each patriot mindC2
-
Lo in Religion's fane I see thee bendC2
I hear thy prayer onY2
