The Wild Huntsman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII JKJKLL MNMNBB LCLCOO PQRSCC

Thy rest was deep at the slumberer's hourA
If thou didst not hear the blastB
Of the savage horn from the mountain towerA
As the Wild Night Huntsman pass'dB
And the roar of the stormy chase went byC
Through the dark unquiet skyC
-
The stag sprung up from his mossy bedD
When he caught the piercing soundsE
And the oak boughs crash'd to his antler'd headD
As he flew from the viewless houndsE
And the falcon soar'd from her craggy heightF
Away through the rushing nightF
-
The banner shook on its ancient holdG
And the pine in its desert placeH
As the cloud and tempest onward roll'dG
With the din of the trampling raceH
And the glens were fill'd with the laugh and shoutI
And the bugle ringing outI
-
From the chieftain's hand the wine cup fellJ
At the castle's festive boardK
And a sudden pause came o'er the swellJ
Of the harp's triumphal chordK
And the Minnesinger's thrilling layL
In the hall died fast awayL
-
The convent's chanted rite was stay'dM
And the hermit dropp'd his beadsN
And a trembling ran through the forest shadeM
At the neigh of the phantom steedsN
And the church bells peal'd to the rocking blastB
As the Wild Night Huntsman pass'dB
-
The storm hath swept with the chase awayL
There is stillness in the skyC
But the mother looks on her son to dayL
With a troubled heart and eyeC
And the maiden's brow hath a shade of careO
Midst the gleam of her golden hairO
-
The Rhine flows bright but its waves ere longP
Must hear a voice of warQ
And a clash of spears our hills amongR
And a trumpet from afarS
And the brave on a bloody turf must lieC
For the Huntsman hath gone byC
