The Troubadour o'er many a plainA
Hath roamed unwearied but in vainA
O'er many a rugged mountain sceneB
And forest wild his track hath beenC
Beneath Calabria's glowing skyD
He hath sung the songs of chivalryE
His voice hath swelled on the Alpine breezeF
And wrung through the snowy PyreneesF
From Ebro's banks to Danube's waveG
He hath sought his prince the loved the braveG
And yet if still on earth thou artH
Oh monarch of the lion heartH
The faithful spirit which distressI
But heightens to devotednessI
By toil and trial vanquished notJ
Shall guide thy minstrel to the spotJ
-
He hath reached a mountain hung with vineK
And woods that wave o'er the lovely RhineK
The feudal towers that crest its heightL
Frown in unconquerable mightL
Dark is their aspect of sullen stateM
No helmet hangs o'er the massy gateM
To bid the wearied pilgrim restN
At the chieftain's board a welcome guestN
Vainly rich evening's parting smileO
Would chase the gloom of the haughty pileO
That 'midst bright sunshine lowers on highD
Like a thunder cloud in a summer skyD
-
Not these the halls where a child of songP
Awhile may speed the hours alongP
Their echoes should repeat aloneQ
The tyrant's mandate the prisoner's moanQ
Or the wild huntsman's bugle blastR
When his phantom train are hurrying pastR
The weary minstrel paused his eyeD
Roved o'er the scene despondinglyO
Within the lengthening shadow castR
By the fortress towers and ramparts vastR
Lingering he gazed The rocks aroundS
Sublime in savage grandeur frownedS
Proud guardians of the regal floodT
In giant strength the mountains stoodU
By torrents cleft by tempests rivenV
Yet mingling still with the calm blue heavenV
Their peaks were bright with a sunny glowO
But the Rhine all shadowy rolled belowO
In purple tints the vineyards smiledW
But the woods beyond waved dark and wildW
Nor pastoral pipe nor convent's bellO
Was heard on the sighing breeze to swellO
But all was lonely silent rudeX
A stern yet glorious solitudeX
-
But hark that solemn stillness breakingY
The Troubadour's wild song is wakingY
Full oft that song in days gone byD
Hath cheered the sons of chivalryE
It hath swelled o'er Judah's mountains loneQ
Hermon thy echoes have learned its toneQ
On the Great Plain its notes have rungZ
The leagued Crusaders' tents amongZ
'Twas loved by the Lion heart who wonV
The palm in the field of AscalonV
And now afar o'er the rocks of RhineV
Peals the bold strain of PalestineV
-
-
The Troubadour's SongP
'Thine hour is come and the stake is set '-
The Soldan cried to the captive knightL
'And the sons of the Prophet in throngs are metA2
To gaze on the fearful sightL
-
'But be our faith by thy lips professedN
The faith of Mecca's shrineV
Cast down the red cross that marks thy vestN
And life shall yet be thine '-
-
'I have seen the flow of my bosom's bloodT
And gazed with undaunted eyeD
I have borne the bright cross through fire and floodT
And think'st thou I fear to dieD
-
'I have stood where thousands by Salem's towersI
Have fallen for the name DivineV
And the faith that cheeredB2
theirC2
closing hoursI
Shall be the light of mine '-
-
'Thus wilt thou die in the pride of healthD2
And the glow of youth's fresh bloomE2
Thou art offered life and pomp and wealthD2
Or torture and the tomb '-
-
'I have been where the crown of thorns was twinedF2
For a dying Saviour's browG2
-
HeE
spurned the treasures that lure mankindF2
And I reject them now '-
-
'Art thou the son of a noble lineV
In a land that is fair and blestN
And doth not thy spirit proud captive pineV
Again on its shores to restN
-
'Thine own is the choice to hail once moreH2
The soil of thy father's birthI2
Or to sleep when thy lingering pangs are o'erJ2
Forgotten in foreign earth '-
-
'Oh fair are the vine clad hills that riseI
In the country of my loveK2
But yet though cloudless my native skiesI
There's a brighter clime above '-
-
The bard hath paused for another toneV
Blends with the music of his ownV
And his heart beats high with hope againV
As a well known voice prolongs the strainV
-
'Are there none within thy father's hallO
Far o'er the wide blue mainV
Young Christian left to deplore thy fallO
With sorrow deep and vain '-
-
'There are hearts that still through all the pastR
Unchanging have loved me wellO
There are eyes whose tears were streaming fastR
When I bade my home farewellO
-
Better they wept o'er the warrior's bierL2
Than the apostate's living stainV
There's a land where those who loved when hereL2
Shall meet to love again '-
-
'Tis he thy prince long sought long lostM2
The leader of the red cross hostN2
'Tis he to none thy joy betrayO2
Young Troubadour away awayO2
Away to the island of the braveG
The gem on the bosom of the waveG
Arouse the sons of the noble soilO
To win their Lion from the toilO
And free the wassail cup shall flowO
Bright in each hall the hearth shall glowO
The festal board shall be richly crownedS
While knights and chieftains revel roundS
And a thousand harps with joy shall ringY
When merry England hails her kingY
