DEEP fiery clouds o'ercast the skyA
Dead stillness reigns in airB
There is not e'en a breeze on highA
The gossamer to bearB
-
The woods are hushed the waves at restC
The lake is dark and stillD
Reflecting on its shadowy breastC
Each form of rock and hillD
-
The lime leaf waves not in the groveE
Nor rose tree in the bowerF
The birds have ceased their songs of loveG
Awed by the threatening hourF
-
'T is noon yet nature's calm profoundH
Seems as at midnight deepI
But hark what peal of awful soundH
Breaks on creation's sleepI
-
The thunder bursts its rolling mightJ
Seems the firm hills to shakeK
And in terrific splendor brightJ
The gathered lightnings breakK
-
Yet fear not shrink not thou my childL
Though by the bolt's descentM
Were the tall cliffs in ruins piledL
And the wide forests rentM
-
Doth not thy God behold thee stillD
With all surveying eyeA
Doth not his power all nature fillD
Around beneath on highA
-
Know hadst thou eagle pinions freeN
To track the realms of airB
Thou couldst not reach a spot where HeN
Would not be with thee thereB
-
In the wide city's peopled towersO
On the vast ocean's plainsP
'Midst the deep woodland's loneliest bowersO
Alike th' Almighty reignsP
-
Then fear not though the angry skyA
A thousand darts should castQ
Why should we tremble e'en to dieA
And be with Him at lastQ
