'Voice of the gifted elder timeA
Voice of the charm and the Runic rhymeA
Speak from the shades and the depths discloseB
How Sigurd may vanquish his mortal foesB
Voice of the buried pastC
-
'Voice of the grave 'tis the mighty hourD
When night with her stars and dreams hath powerD
And my step hath been soundless on the snowsB
And the spell I have sung hath laid reposeB
On the billow and the blast '-
-
Then the torrents of the NorthE
And the forest pines were stillF
While a hollow chant came forthE
From the dark sepulchral hillF
-
'There shines no sun 'midst the hidden deadG
But where the day looks not the brave may treadG
There is heard no song and no mead is pour'dH
But the warrior may come to the silent boardH
In the shadow of the nightI
-
'There is laid a sword in thy father's tombJ
And its edge is fraught with thy foeman's doomJ
But soft be thy step through the silence deepK
And move not the urn in the house of sleepK
For the viewless have fearful might '-
-
Then died the solemn layL
As a trumpet's music diesM
By the night wind borne awayL
Through the wild and stormy skiesM
-
The fir trees rock'd to the wailing blastC
As on through the forest the warrior pass'dC
Through the forest of Odin the dim and oldN
The dark place of visions and legends toldN
By the fires of Northern pineO
-
The fir trees rock'd and the frozen groundP
Gave back to his footstep a hollow soundP
And it seem'd that the depths of those awful shadesQ
From the dreary gloom of their long arcadesQ
Gave warning with voice and signO
-
But the wind strange magic knowsB
To call wild shape and toneR
From the grey wood's tossing boughsS
When night is on her throneR
-
The pines clos'd o'er him with deeper gloomJ
As he took the path to the monarch's tombJ
The pole star shone and the heavens were brightI
With the arrowy streams of the northern lightI
But his road through dimness layL
-
He pass'd in the heart of that ancient woodT
The dark shrine stain'd with the victim's bloodU
Nor paus'd till the rock where a vaulted bedG
Had been hewn of old for the kingly deadG
Arose on his midnight wayL
-
Then first a moment's chillF
Went shuddering through his breastV
And the steel clad man stood stillF
Before that place of restV
-
But he cross'd at length with a deep drawn breathW
The threshold floor of the hall of DeathW
And look'd on the pale mysterious fireD
Which gleam'd from the urn of his warrior sireD
With a strange and solemn lightI
-
Then darkly the words of the boding strainX
Like an omen rose on his soul againY
'Soft be thy step through the silence deepK
And move not the urn in the house of sleepK
For the viewless have fearful might '-
-
But the gleaming sword and shieldZ
Of many a battle dayL
Hung o'er that urn reveal'dZ
By the tomb fire's waveless rayL
-
With a faded wreath of oak leaves boundP
They hung o'er the dust of the far renown'dP
Whom the bright Valkyriur's warning voiceA2
Had call'd to the banquet where gods rejoiceA2
And the rich mead flows in lightI
-
With a beating heart his son drew nearB2
And still rang the verse in his thrilling earC2
'Soft be thy step through the silence deepK
And move not the urn in the house of sleepK
For the viewless have fearful might '-
-
And many a Saga's rhymeA
And legend of the graveD2
That shadowy scene and timeA
Call'd back to daunt the braveD2
-
But he rais'd his arm and the flame grew dimE2
And the sword in its light seem'd to wave and swimE2
And his faltering hand could not grasp it wellF2
From the pale oak wreath with a clash it fellF2
Through the chamber of the deadG
-
The deep tomb rang with the heavy soundP
And the urn lay shiver'd in fragments roundP
And a rush as of tempests quench'd the fireD
And the scatter'd dust of his warlike sireD
Was strewn on the Champion's headG
-
One moment and all was stillF
In the slumberer's ancient hallG2
When the rock had ceas'd to thrillF
With the mighty weapon's fallG2
-
The stars were just fading one by oneH2
The clouds were just ting'd by the early sunH2
When there stream'd through the cavern a torch's flameI2
And the brother of Sigurd the valiant cameI2
To seek him in the tombJ
-
Stretch'd on his shield like the steel girt slainX
By moonlight seen on the battle plainX
In a speechless trance lay the warrior thereJ2
But he wildly woke when the torch's glareJ2
Burst on him through the gloomJ
-
'The morning wind blows freeK2
And the hour of chase is nearB2
Come forth come forth with meK2
What dost thou Sigurd here '-
-
'I have put out the holy sepulchral fireD
I have scatter'd the dust of my warrior sireD
It burns on my head and it weighs down my heartL2
But the winds shall not wander without their partL2
To strew o'er the restless deepK
-
'In the mantle of death he was here with me nowM2
There was wrath in his eye there was gloom on his browM2
And his cold still glance on my spirit fellF2
With an icy ray and a withering spellF2
Oh chill is the house of sleep '-
-
'The morning wind blows freeK2
And the reddening sun shines clearB2
Come forth come forth with meK2
It is dark and fearful here '-
-
'He is there he is there with his shadowy frownN2
But gone from his head is the kingly crownN2
The crown from his head and the spear from his handO2
They have chas'd him far from the glorious landO2
Where the feast of the gods is spreadG
-
'He must go forth alone on his phantom steedP2
He must ride o'er the grave hills with stormy speedP2
His place is no longer at Odin's boardH
He is driven from Valhalla without his swordH
But the slayer shall avenge the dead '-
-
That sword its fame had wonH2
By the fall of many a crestV
But its fiercest work was doneH2
In the tomb on Sigurd's breastV
