The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth his handy workA
-
Psalm xixB
-
-
NO cloud obscures the summer skyC
The moon in brightness walks on highC
And set in azure every starD
Shines like a gem of heaven afarD
-
Child of the earth oh lift thy glanceB
To yon bright firmament's expanseB
The glories of its realm exploreE
And gaze and wonder and adoreE
-
Doth it not speak to every senseB
The marvels of OmnipotenceB
Seest thou not there th' Almighty nameF
Inscribed in characters of flameF
-
Count o'er those lamps of quenchless lightG
That sparkle through the shades of nightG
Behold them can a mortal boastH
To number that celestial hostH
-
Mark well each little star whose raysB
In distant splendor meet thy gazeB
Each is a world by Him sustainedI
Who from eternity hath reignedI
-
Each shining not for earth aloneJ
Hath suns and planets of its ownJ
And beings whose existence springsB
From Him th' all powerful King of kingsB
-
Haply those glorious beings knowK
Nor stain of guilt nor tear of woeK
But raising still th' adoring voiceB
For ever in their God rejoiceB
-
What then art thou oh child of clayL
Amid creation's grandeur sayL
E'en as an insect on the breezeB
E'en as a dew drop lost in seasB
-
Yet fear thou not the sovereign handM
Which spread the ocean and the landM
And hung the rolling spheres in airN
Hath e'en for thee a Father's careN
-
Be thou at peace th' all seeing eyeC
Pervading earth and air and skyC
The searching glance which none may fleeO
Is still in mercy turned on theeO
