Know ye not when our deadA
From sleep to battle sprungB
When the Persian charger's treadA
On their cowering greensward rungB
When the trampling march of foesC
Had crush'd our vines and flowersD
When jewell'd crests aroseC
Through the holy laurel bowersD
-
When banners caught the breezeE
When helms in sunlight shoneF
When masts were on the seasE
And spears on MarathonG
-
There was one a leader crown'dH
And arm'd for Greece that dayI
But the falchions made no soundH
On his gleaming war arrayI
In the battle's front he stoodJ
With his tall and shadowy crestK
But the arrows drew no bloodL
Though their path was through his breastK
-
When banners caught the breezeE
When helms in sunlight shoneF
When masts were on the seasE
And spears on MarathonG
-
His sword was seen to flashM
Where the boldest deeds were doneN
But it smote without a clashM
The stroke was heard by noneN
His voice was not of thoseC
That swell'd the rolling blastO
And his steps fell hush'd like snowsC
'Twas the Shade of Theseus pass'dO
-
When banners caught the breezeE
When helms in sunlight shoneF
When masts were on the seasE
And spears on MarathonG
-
Far sweeping through the foeP
With a fiery charge he boreQ
And the Mede left many a bowR
On the sounding ocean shoreQ
And the foaming waves grew redA
And the sails were crowded fastO
When the sons of Asia fledA
As the Shade of Theseus pass'dO
-
When banners caught the breezeE
When helms in sunlight shoneF
When masts were on the seasE
And spears on MarathonG
