GO trace th' unnumbered streams o'er earthA
That wind their devious courseB
That draw from Alpine heights their birthA
Deep vale or cavern sourceB
-
Some by majestic cities glideC
Proud scenes of man's renownD
Some lead their solitary tideC
Where pathless forests frownD
-
Some calmly roll in golden sandsE
Where Afric's deserts lieF
Or spread to clothe rejoicing landsE
With rich fertilityG
-
These bear the bark whose stately sailH
Exulting seems to swellI
While these scarce rippled by a galeH
Sleep in the lonely dellI
-
Yet on alike though swift or slowJ
Their various waves may sweepK
Through cities or through shades they flowJ
To the same boundless deepK
-
Oh thus whate'er our path of lifeL
Through sunshine or through gloomM
Through scenes of quiet or of strifeL
Its end is still the tombM
-
The chief whose mighty deeds we hailH
The monarch throned on highF
The peasant in his native valeH
All journey on to dieF
-
But if Thy guardian care my GodN
The pilgrim's course attendO
I will not fear the dark abodeP
To which my footsteps bendO
-
For thence thine all redeeming SonQ
Who died the world to saveR
In light in triumph rose and wonQ
The victory from the graveR
