Ring joyous chords ring out againB
A swifter still and a wilder strainC
They are here the fair face and the careless heartD
And stars shall wane ere the mirthful partD
But I met a dimly mournful glanceE
In a sudden turn of the flying danceE
I heard the tone of a heavy sighF
In a pause of the thrilling melodyG
And it is not well that woe should breatheH
On the bright spring flowers of the festal wreathI
Ye that to thought or to grief belongJ
Leave leave the hall of songJ
-
Ring joyous chords but who art thouK
With the shadowy locks o'er thy pale young browK
And the world of dreamy gloom that liesL
In the misty depths of thy soft dark eyesL
Thou hast lov'd fair girl thou hast lov'd too wellM
Thou art mourning now o'er a broken spellM
Thou hast pour'd thy heart's rich treasures forthN
And art unrepaid for their priceless worthO
Mourn on yet come thou not here the whileP
It is but a pain to see thee smileP
There is not a tone in our songs for theeG
Home with thy sorrows fleeG
-
Ring joyous chords ring out againB
But what dost thou with the Revel's trainC
A silvery voice through the soft air floatsQ
But thou hast no part in the gladdening notesQ
There are bright young faces that pass thee byF
But they fix no glance of thy wandering eyeF
Away there's a void in thy yearning breastR
Thou weary man wilt thou here find restR
Away for thy thoughts from the scene have fledS
And the love of thy spirit is with the deadS
Thou art but more lone midst the sounds of mirthO
Back to thy silent hearthT
-
Ring joyous chords ring forth againB
A swifter still and a wilder strainC
But thou though a reckless mien be thineU
And thy cup be crown'd with the foaming wineU
By the fitful bursts of thy laughter loudV
By thine eye's quick flash through its troubled cloudV
I know thee it is but the wakeful fearW
Of a haunted bosom that brings thee hereX
I know thee thou fearest the solemn nightY
With her piercing stars and her deep wind's mightY
There's a tone in her voice which thou fain wouldst shunZ
For it asks what the secret soul hath doneZ
And thou there's a dark weight on thine awayA2
Back to thy home and prayA2
-
Ring joyous chords ring out againB
A swifter still and a wilder strainC
And bring fresh wreaths we will banish allB2
Save the free in heart from our festive hallB2
On through the maze of the fleet dance onC2
But where are the young and the lovely goneD2
Where are the brows with the red rose crown'dE2
And the floating forms with the bright zone boundE2
And the waving locks and the flying feetF2
That still should be where the mirthful meetF2
They are gone they are fled they are parted allB2
Alas the forsaken hallB2
