In sweet pride upon that insult keenA
She smiled then drooping mute and broken heartedB
To the cold comfort of the grave departed MilmanC
-
It stands where northern willows weepD
A temple fair and loneE
Soft shadows o'er its marble sweepD
From cypress branches thrownE
While silently around it spreadF
Thou feel'st the presence of the deadF
-
And what within is richly shrinedF
A sculptur'd woman's formG
Lovely in perfect rest reclinedF
As one beyond the stormG
Yet not of death but slumber liesH
The solemn sweetness on those eyesH
-
The folded hands the calm pure faceI
The mantle's quiet flowJ
The gentle yet majestic graceI
Throned on the matron browK
These in that scene of tender gloomL
With a still glory robe the tombL
-
There stands an eagle at the feetF
Of the fair image wroughtF
A kingly emblem nor unmeetF
To wake yet deeper thoughtF
She whose high heart finds rest belowJ
Was royal in her birth and woJ
-
There are pale garlands hung aboveM
Of dying scent and hueN
She was a mother in her loveM
How sorrowfully trueN
Oh hallow'd long be every leafO
The record of her children's griefO
-
She saw their birthright's warrior crownP
Of olden glory spoil'dF
The standard of their sires borne downP
The shield's bright blazon soil'dF
She met the tempest meekly braveQ
Then turn'd o'erwearied to the graveQ
-
She slumber'd but it came it cameR
Her land's redeeming hourS
With the glad shout and signal flameR
Sent on from tower to towerS
Fast thro' the realm a spirit movedF
'Twas hers the lofty and the lovedF
-
Then was her name a note that wrungT
To rouse bold hearts from sleepD
Her memory as a banner flungT
Forth by the Baltic deepD
Her grief a bitter vial pour'dF
To sanctify th' avenger's swordF
-
And the crown'd eagle spread againU
His pinion to the sunC
And the strong land shook off its chainV
So was the triumph wonC
But wo for earth where sorrow's toneE
Still blends with victory's She was goneW
