The Nightingale Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF CCGG HHIJ KKLL MMNO AAPP

WHEN twilight's grey and pensive hourA
Brings the low breeze and shuts the flowerA
And bids the solitary starB
Shine in pale beauty from afarB
-
When gathering shades the landscape veilC
And peasants seek their village daleC
And mists from river wave ariseD
And dew in every blossom liesD
-
When evening's primrose opes to shedE
Soft fragrance round her grassy bedE
When glow worms in the wood walk lightF
Their lamp to cheer the traveller's sightF
-
At that calm hour so still so paleC
Awakes the lonely NightingaleC
And from a hermitage of shadeG
Fills with her voice the forest gladeG
-
And sweeter far that melting voiceH
Than all which through the day rejoiceH
And still shall bard and wanderer loveI
The twilight music of the groveJ
-
Father in Heaven oh thus when dayK
With all its cares hath passed awayK
And silent hours waft peace on earthL
And hush the louder strains of mirthL
-
Thus may sweet songs of praise and prayerM
To Thee my spirit's offering bearM
Yon star my signal set on highN
For vesper hymns of pietyO
-
So may thy mercy and thy powerA
Protect me through the midnight hourA
And balmy sleep and visions blestP
Smile on thy servant's bed of restP
