The Laplander To His Rein-deer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IDID JAKA LMLM NDND

HOW long oh my faithful companion and guideA
Thou hast wafted o'er deserts my carB
How oft oh my rein deer thy speed has been triedA
O'er mountains unknown and afarB
-
But thy youth is departed thy fire is no moreC
And thy limbs all their vigor have lostD
For age steals upon thee relentless and hoarC
And colder than winter his frostD
-
When friendship or pleasure invited awayE
Thou hast borne me o'er valleys and plainsF
Untir'd with the dangers the toils of the dayE
While the road was beguil'd by my strainsF
-
When love gave the word o'er the landscape of snowG
We flew like the wings of the windH
In this ice cover'd region his sun beam may glowG
To melt and to soften the mindH
-
But thy youth is departed thy spirit and graceI
And thy limbs all their vigor have lostD
For age steals upon thee with lingering paceI
And colder than winter his frostD
-
How oft has the summer in mantle of greenJ
Array'd the wild Tenglio's sideA
Since thou oh my rein deer my servant hast beenK
My faithful companion and guideA
-
When we journey'd together and both in our primeL
How fleet were thy steps o'er the wasteM
But fleeter than thee oh my rein deer is timeL
More swift more unsparing in hasteM
-
For thy youth is departed thy spirit is fledN
And thy limbs all their vigor have lostD
Now age steals upon thee unwelcome and dreadN
And colder than winter his frostD
