The Landing Of The Pilgrim Fathers In New England Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDF GHGH IJKJ LMLM NONO PQPQ ARAR STFT UVUV

The breaking waves dashed highA
On a stern and rock bound coastB
And the woods against a stormy skyA
Their giant branches tossedC
-
And the heavy night hung darkD
The hills and waters o'erE
When a band of exiles moored their barkD
On the wild New England shoreF
-
Not as the conqueror comesG
They the true hearted cameH
Not with the roll of the stirring drumsG
And the trumpet that sings of fameH
-
Not as the flying comeI
In silence and in fearJ
They shook the depths of the desert gloomK
With their hymns of lofty cheerJ
-
Amidst the storm they sangL
And the stars heard and the seaM
And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rangL
To the anthem of the freeM
-
The ocean eagle soaredN
From his nest by the white wave's foamO
And the rocking pines of the forest roaredN
This was their welcome homeO
-
There were men with hoary hairP
Amidst that pilgrim bandQ
Why had they come to wither thereP
Away from their childhood's landQ
-
There was woman's fearless eyeA
Lit by her deep love's truthR
There was manhood's brow serenely highA
And the fiery heart of youthR
-
What sought they thus afarS
Bright jewels of the mineT
The wealth of seas the spoils of warF
They sought a faith's pure shrineT
-
Ay call it holy groundU
The soil where first they trodV
They have left unstained what there they foundU
Freedom to worship GodV
