The Kaiser feasted in his hallA
The red wine mantled highB
Banners were trembling on the wallA
To the peals of minstrelsyC
And many a gleam and sparkle cameD
From the armour hung aroundE
As it caught the glance of the torch's flameD
Or the hearth with pine boughs crown'dE
-
Why fell there silence on the chordF
Beneath the harper's handG
And suddenly from that rich boardF
Why rose the wassail bandG
-
The strings were hush'd the knights made wayH
For the queenly mother's treadI
As up the hall in dark arrayH
Two fair hair'd boys she ledI
-
She led them even to the Kaiser's placeC
And still before him stoodJ
Till with strange wonder o'er his faceC
Flush'd the proud warrior bloodK
And 'Speak my mother speak ' he criedL
'Wherefore this mourning vestM
And the clinging children by thy sideL
In weeds of sadness drest '-
-
'Well may a mourning vest be mineN
And theirs my son my sonO
Look on the features of thy lineN
In each fair little oneO
-
Tho' grief awhile within their eyesC
Hath tamed the dancing gleeP
Yet there thine own quick spirit liesC
Thy brother's children seeP
-
'And where is he thy brother whereQ
He in thy home that grewR
And smiling with his sunny hairQ
Ever to greet thee flewR
How would his arms thy neck entwineN
His fond lips press thy browS
My son oh call these orphans thineN
Thou hast no brother nowS
-
'What from their gentle eyes doth noughtL
Speak of thy childhood's hoursC
And smite thee with a tender thoughtL
Of thy dead father's towersC
-
Kind was thy boyish heart and trueR
When rear'd together thereQ
Thro' the old woods like fawns ye flewR
Where is thy brother whereQ
-
'Well didst thou love him then and heP
Still at thy side was seenT
How is it that such things can beP
As tho' they ne'er had beenU
Evil was this world's breath which cameD
Between the good and braveV
Now must the tears of grief and shameD
Be offer'd to the graveV
-
'And let them let them there be pour'dL
Though all unfelt belowW
Thine own wrung heart to love restor'dL
Shall soften as they flowW
-
Oh death is mighty to make peaceC
Now bid his work be doneO
So many an inward strife shall ceaseC
Take take these babes my son '-
-
His eye was dimm'd the strong man shookX
With feelings long suppress'dL
Up in his arms the boys he tookX
And strain'd them to his breastL
And a shout from all in the royal hallA
Burst forth to hail the sightL
And eyes were wet midst the brave that metL
At the Kaiser's feast that nightL
