Thou thing of years departedA
What ages have gone byB
Since here the mournful seal was setC
By love and agonyD
-
Temple and tower have moulder'dC
Empires from earth have pass'dC
And woman's heart hath left a traceE
Those glories to outlastC
-
And childhood's fragile imageF
Thus fearfully enshrin'dC
Survives the proud memorials rear'dC
By conquerors of mankindC
-
Babe wert thou brightly slumberingG
Upon thy mother's breastC
When suddenly the fiery tombH
Shut round each gentle guestC
-
A strange dark fate o'ertook youI
Fair babe and loving heartC
One moment of a thousand pangsJ
Yet better than to partC
-
Haply of that fond bosomK
On ashes here impress'dC
Thou wert the only treasure childC
Whereon a hope might restC
-
Perchance all vainly lavish'dC
Its other love had beenL
And where it trusted nought remain'dC
But thorns on which to leanM
-
Far better then to perishN
Thy form within its claspO
Than live and lose thee precious oneP
From that impassion'd graspO
-
Oh I could pass all relicsQ
Left by the pomps of oldC
To gaze on this rude monumentC
Cast in affection's mouldC
-
Love human love what art thouR
Thy print upon the dustC
Outlives the cities of renownS
Wherein the mighty trustC
-
Immortal oh immortalT
Thou art whose earthly glowU
Hath given these ashes holinessV
It must it must be soU
