The Illuminated City Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEE FFGGHHII IIJJKKII LLMMNNEE IIOOPPQQ

THE hills all glow'd with a festive lightA
For the royal city rejoic'd by nightA
There were lamps hung forth upon tower and treeB
Banners were lifted and streaming freeB
Every tall pillar was wreath'd with fireC
Like a shooting meteor was every spireD
And the outline of many a dome on highE
Was traced as in stars on the clear dark skyE
-
I pass'd thro' the streets there were throngs on throngsF
Like sounds of the deep were their mingled songsF
There was music forth from each palace borneG
A peal of the cymbal the harp and hornG
The forests heard it the mountains rangH
The hamlets woke to its haughty clangH
Rich and victorious was every toneI
Telling the land of her foes o'erthrownI
-
Didst thou meet not a mourner for all the slainI
Thousands lie dead on their battle plainI
Gallant and true were the hearts that fellJ
Grief in the homes they have left must dwellJ
Grief o'er the aspect of childhood spreadK
And bowing the beauty of woman's headK
Didst thou hear midst the songs not one tender moanI
For the many brave to their slumbers goneI
-
I saw not the face of a weeper thereL
Too strong perchance was the bright lamp's glareL
I heard not a wail midst the joyous crowdM
The music of victory was all too loudM
Mighty it roll'd on the winds afarN
Shaking the streets like a conqueror's carN
Thro' torches and streamers its flood swept byE
How could I listen for moan or sighE
-
Turn then away from life's pageants turnI
If its deep story thy heart would learnI
Ever too bright is that outward showO
Dazzling the eyes till they see not woO
But lift the proud mantle which hides from thy viewP
The things thou shouldst gaze on the sad and trueP
Nor fear to survey what its folds concealQ
So must thy spirit be taught to feelQ
