The Illuminated City Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEE FFGGHHII IIJJKKII LLMMNNEE IIOOPPQQTHE hills all glow'd with a festive light | A |
For the royal city rejoic'd by night | A |
There were lamps hung forth upon tower and tree | B |
Banners were lifted and streaming free | B |
Every tall pillar was wreath'd with fire | C |
Like a shooting meteor was every spire | D |
And the outline of many a dome on high | E |
Was traced as in stars on the clear dark sky | E |
- | |
I pass'd thro' the streets there were throngs on throngs | F |
Like sounds of the deep were their mingled songs | F |
There was music forth from each palace borne | G |
A peal of the cymbal the harp and horn | G |
The forests heard it the mountains rang | H |
The hamlets woke to its haughty clang | H |
Rich and victorious was every tone | I |
Telling the land of her foes o'erthrown | I |
- | |
Didst thou meet not a mourner for all the slain | I |
Thousands lie dead on their battle plain | I |
Gallant and true were the hearts that fell | J |
Grief in the homes they have left must dwell | J |
Grief o'er the aspect of childhood spread | K |
And bowing the beauty of woman's head | K |
Didst thou hear midst the songs not one tender moan | I |
For the many brave to their slumbers gone | I |
- | |
I saw not the face of a weeper there | L |
Too strong perchance was the bright lamp's glare | L |
I heard not a wail midst the joyous crowd | M |
The music of victory was all too loud | M |
Mighty it roll'd on the winds afar | N |
Shaking the streets like a conqueror's car | N |
Thro' torches and streamers its flood swept by | E |
How could I listen for moan or sigh | E |
- | |
Turn then away from life's pageants turn | I |
If its deep story thy heart would learn | I |
Ever too bright is that outward show | O |
Dazzling the eyes till they see not wo | O |
But lift the proud mantle which hides from thy view | P |
The things thou shouldst gaze on the sad and true | P |
Nor fear to survey what its folds conceal | Q |
So must thy spirit be taught to feel | Q |
