The Departed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGFG HIJK GLGL MNBN OPOP QIRI STST KUVW XYXY ZA2B2A2 GC2GC2 JD2E2D2Thou shalt lie down | A |
With patriarchs of the infant world with kings | B |
The powerful of the earth the wise the good | C |
Fair forms and hoary seers of ages past | D |
All in one mighty sepulchre BRYANT | E |
- | |
- | |
AND shrink ye from the way | F |
To the spirit's distant shore | G |
Earth's mightiest men in arm'd array | F |
Are thither gone before | G |
- | |
The warrior kings whose banner | H |
Flew far as eagles fly | I |
They are gone where swords avail them not | J |
From the feast of victory | K |
- | |
And the seers who sat of yore | G |
By orient palm or wave | L |
They have pass'd with all their starry lore | G |
Can ye still fear the grave | L |
- | |
We fear we fear the sunshine | M |
Is joyous to behold | N |
And we reck not of the buried kings | B |
Nor the awful seers of old | N |
- | |
Ye shrink the bards whose lays | O |
Have made your deep hearts burn | P |
They have left the sun and the voice of praise | O |
For the land whence none return | P |
- | |
And the beautiful whose record | Q |
Is the verse that cannot die | I |
They too are gone with their glorious bloom | R |
From the love of human eye | I |
- | |
Would ye not join that throng | S |
Of the earth's departed flowers | T |
And the masters of the mighty song | S |
In their far and fadeless bowers | T |
- | |
Those songs are high and holy | K |
But they vanquish not our fear | U |
Not from our path those flowers are gone | V |
We fain would linger here | W |
- | |
Linger then yet awhile | X |
As the last leaves on the bough | Y |
Ye have lov'd the light of many a smile | X |
That is taken from you now | Y |
- | |
There have been sweet singing voices | Z |
In your walks that now are still | A2 |
There are seats left void in your earthly homes | B2 |
Which none again may fill | A2 |
- | |
Soft eyes are seen no more | G |
That made spring time in your heart | C2 |
Kindred and friends are gone before | G |
And ye still fear to part | C2 |
- | |
We fear not now we fear not | J |
Though the way thro' darkness bends | D2 |
Our souls are strong to follow them | E2 |
Our own familiar friends | D2 |
