A song for the death day of the braveA
A song of prideB
The youth went down to a hero's graveA
With the sword his brideB
-
He went with his noble heart unwornC
And pure and highD
An eagle stooping from clouds of mornC
Only to dieD
-
He went with the lyre whose lofty toneC
Beneath his handE
Had thrill'd to the name of his God aloneC
And his Father landE
-
And with all his glorious feelings yetF
In their first glowG
Like a southern stream that no frost hath metF
To chain its flowG
-
A song for the death day of the braveA
A song of prideB
For him that went to a hero's graveA
With the sword his brideB
-
He hath left a voice in his trumpet laysH
To turn the flightI
And a guiding spirit for after daysH
Like a watch fire's lightI
-
And a grief in his father's soul to restJ
Midst all high thoughtK
And a memory unto his mother's breastJ
With healing fraughtK
-
And a name and fame above the blightI
Of earthly breathL
Beautiful beautiful and brightI
In life and deathL
-
A song for the death day of the braveA
A song of prideB
For him that went to a hero's graveA
With the sword his brideB
