Oh enter not yon shadowy caveA
Seek not the bright spars thereB
Though the whispering pines that o'er it waveA
With freshness fill the airB
For there the Patriot ThreeC
In the garb of old array'dD
By their native Forest seaC
On a rocky couch are laidD
-
The Patriot Three that met of yoreE
Beneath the midnight skyF
And leagued their hearts on the Gr tli shoreE
In the name of libertyC
Now silently they sleepG
Amidst the hills they freedH
But their rest is only deepG
Till their country's hour of needH
-
They start not at the hunter's callI
Nor the Lammer geyer's cryF
Nor the rush of a sudden torrent's fallI
Nor the Lauwine thundering byF
And the Alpine herdsman's layJ
To a Switzer's heart so dearK
On the wild wind floats awayJ
No more for them to hearL
-
But when the battle horn is blownM
Till the Schreckhorn's peaks replyF
When the Jungfrau's cliffs send back the toneM
Through their eagles' lonely skyF
-
When spear heads light the lakesN
When trumpets loose the snowsO
When the rushing war steed shakesN
The glacier's mute reposeO
-
When Uri's beechen woods wave redP
In the burning hamlet's lightQ
Then from the cavern of the deadP
Shall the sleepers wake in mightQ
With a leap like Tell's proud leapG
When away the helm he flungR
And boldly up the steepG
From the flashing billow sprungR
-
They shall wake beside their Forest seaC
In the ancient garb they woreE
When they link'd the hands that made us freeC
On the Gr tli's moonlight shoreE
And their voices shall be heardS
And be answer'd with a shoutT
Till the echoing Alps are stirr'dS
And the signal fires blaze outT
-
And the land shall see such deeds againU
As those of that proud dayJ
When Winkelried on Sempach's plainV
Through the serried spears made wayJ
And when the rocks came downW
On the dark Morgarten dellX
And the crowned casques o'erthrownW
Before our fathers fellX
-
For the K hreihen's notes must never soundY
In a land that wears the chainW
And the vines on freedom's holy groundY
Untrampled must remainW
And the yellow harvests waveA
For no stranger's hand to reapG
While within their silent caveA
The men of Gr tli sleepG
