The Captive Knight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAB CDDCEEFGGFEE HIIHEE JKKJEE ILLIM

The prisoned thrush may brook the cageA
The captive eagle dies for rageA
Lady of the LakeB
-
-
'Twas a trumpet's pealing soundC
And the knight look'd down from the Paynim's towerD
And a Christian host in its pride and powerD
Thro' the pass beneath him woundC
Cease awhile clarion Clarion wild and shrillE
Cease let them hear the captive's voice be stillE
'I knew 'twas a trumpet's noteF
And I see my brethren's lances gleamG
And their pennons wave by the mountain streamG
And their plumes to the glad wind floatF
Cease awhile clarion Clarion wild and shrillE
Cease let them hear the captive's voice be stillE
-
'I am here with my heavy chainH
And I look on a torrent sweeping byI
And an eagle rushing to the skyI
And a host to its battle plainH
Cease awhile clarion Clarion wild and shrillE
Cease let them hear the captive's voice be stillE
-
'Must I pine in my fetters hereJ
With the wild wave's foam and the free bird's flightK
And the tall spears glancing on my sightK
And the trumpet in mine earJ
Cease awhile clarion Clarion wild and shrillE
Cease let them hear the captive's voice be stillE
-
'They are gone they have all pass'd byI
They in whose wars I had borne my partL
They that I lov'd with a brother's heartL
They have left me here to dieI
Sound again clarion Clarion pour thy blastM
Sound for the captive's dream of hope is past '-
