YE nations of Europe arising to warA
And scorning submission to tyranny's mightB
Oh follow the track of my bright blazing carC
Diffusing a path way of radiance afarC
Dispelling the shadows of nightB
-
And hark the destroyer has summon'd his bandD
He waves the proud sceptre his magical wandE
In legions they rush to the fieldF
'Tis the voice of destruction that swells in the stormG
The cloud and the tempest envelop his formG
O patriots O heroes O chiefs of renownH
Awake in my cause and contend for my crownH
And vict'ry shall hallow your shieldF
-
Oh think of your fathers how nobly they foughtI
Disdaining each peril the combat they soughtI
And round me intrepid they stoodJ
They worshipp'd the beam of my sun darting eyeK
Exalted my banner all dreadful on highK
'Twas their pillar of glory and kindling with prideL
Around it they conquer'd around it they diedL
And ting'd the bright streamer in bloodM
To you is intrusted the fire flashing swordN
For ages defended for ages ador'dN
The sword that has slumber'd too longO
'Tis the weapon of Liberty sacred its aidP
For heav'n truth and justice have hallow'd the bladeP
Oh seize it with ecstacy wield it ye braveQ
Oh seize it to punish to conquer to saveQ
Oh hail it ye minstrels in songO
Fair dazzling unblemish'd its lustre is pureR
For martyrs have died to preserve it secureR
And heroes to guard it have bledS
-
'Twas this that illumin'd the fields of the fightB
When the Chief of Vimeira was matchless in mightB
In lightning effulgence at Baylen it stream'dT
At Corunna the zenith of glory it beam'dT
O'er the warrior the patriot the deadS
O Albion my throne and my temple of restU
Fair light of the waves lovely star of the westU
Ever steady resplendent the sameV
Thou shrine of my spirit thou land of my heartW
Where life inspiration and hope I impartW
Behold where my cynosure brilliant appearsX
And beams thro' the mist veil of darkness and tearsY
To guide thee to conquest and fameV
-
Oh thou art my guardian supreme o'er the seaZ
Still foremost undaunted to combat for meZ
Thou planet thou empress of islesA2
Oh fearless in danger awake at my callB2
Shall the standard the altar of Liberty fallB2
-
No never fair queen while thy sons of the mainC2
My trophies my rights and my banners maintainC2
And live in the heav'n of my smilesA2
Ye nations of Europe all rous'd by alarmsD2
Oh imitate Albion the peerless in armsD2
Who kindles my torch from afarC
Her children are mine an invincible bandD
My look is the sun beam that brightens their landD
And never oh never that sun beam shall ceaseE2
And ne'er shall the light of my presence decreaseE2
While they follow my bright blazing carC
O Austrian warriors who rise in my causeF2
Ye fight with my falchion ye fight for my lawsG2
And your's is the armour of rightB
Then rush to the battle field scorning a fearH2
And Justice and Freedom shall frown on your spearH2
In valor in truth and in ardor the sameV
All kindling with energy breathing with flameV
Ye shall conquer a torrent of mightB
-
The slain shall exult in resigning their breathI2
They shall smile they shall burn they shall triumph in deathI2
And who might not envy their bierJ2
The living victorious shall strew o'er their tombK2
The garlands of conquest unfading in bloomK2
And glory's fair Amaranth proudly shall waveQ
In beauty unsullied adorning their graveQ
Too bright to be stain'd with a tearL2
-
And you brave Iberians oh ever disdainC2
The sword of oppression and tyranny's chainC2
Be free gallant Spaniards or dieK
For you when surrounded by darkness and foesM2
The day spring of Freedom in radiance aroseM2
Tho' shadows and clouds may obscure it awhileN2
Oh yet it may brighten oh yet it may smileN2
And beam in meridian on highK
-
But where is the patriot undaunted and boldO2
Whose name is immortal whose deeds are enroll'dO2
On adamant high in my fameV
-
My Palafox oft must I weep to recalN2
Thy trophies my hero thy fame and thy fallN2
Thy sabre was lightning thy spirit was fireP2
Thy arm and thy bosom 'twas mine to inspireQ2
Young martyr to glory and SpainC2
O Heav'n when he fought undismay'd by my sideL
Why why was thine aid was thine armour deny'dL
Were justice and vengeance no moreA
Yet yet let me hope that the flame of his soulN2
Will burn in his countrymen scorning controlN2
The foes of mankind and religion consumeK2
The dark'ning horizon of Europe illumeK2
And the days of her triumph restoreA
Ye realms and ye nations your legions uniteL
Oh righteous and hallow'd your warA
Unfurl the red standard fair Hope is your lightL
And this be your watch word in danger and fightL
'O Liberty thou art our star '-
