The Birds Of Passage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCD EEFFG GGHIJ KKLLMM NNOOP QQOORRBirds joyous birds of the wandering wing | A |
Whence is it ye come with the flowers of spring | A |
'We come from the shores of the green old Nile | B |
From the land where the roses of Sharon smile | B |
From the palms that wave thro' the Indian sky | C |
From the myrrh trees of glowing Araby | D |
- | |
'We have swept o'er cities in song renown'd | E |
Silent they lie with the deserts round | E |
We have cross'd proud rivers whose tide hath roll'd | F |
All dark with the warrior blood of old | F |
And each worn wing hath regain'd its home | G |
Under peasant's roof tree or monarch's dome ' | - |
- | |
And what have ye found in the monarch's dome | G |
Since last ye travers'd the blue sea's foam | G |
'We have found a change we have found a pall | H |
And a gloom o'ershadowing the banquet's hall | I |
And a mark on the floor as of life drops spilt | J |
Nought looks the same save the nest we built ' | - |
- | |
Oh joyous birds it hath still been so | K |
Thro' the halls of kings doth the tempest go | K |
But the huts of the hamlet lie still and deep | L |
And the hills o'er their quiet a vigil keep | L |
Say what have ye found in the peasant's cot | M |
Since last ye parted from that sweet spot | M |
- | |
'A change we have found there and many a change | N |
Faces and footsteps and all things strange | N |
Gone are the heads of the silvery hair | O |
And the young that were have a brow of care | O |
And the place is hush'd where the children play'd | P |
Nought looks the same save the nest we made ' | - |
- | |
Sad is your tale of the beautiful earth | Q |
Birds that o'ersweep it in power and mirth | Q |
Yet thro' the wastes of the trackless air | O |
Ye have a Guide and shall we despair | O |
Ye over desert and deep have pass'd | R |
So may we reach our bright home at last | R |
