WHILE bending o'er my golden lyreA
While waving light my wing of fireB
Creation's regions to exploreC
To gaze to wonder to adoreC
While faithful to th' eternal willD
My task of glory I fulfilD
To rule the comet's dread careerE
To guide the planets on their sphereE
While from this pure empyreal skyF
I dart my truth enlighten'd eyeF
What mists involve yon changeful sceneG
How dark thy views thou orb terreneG
E'en now compassion clouds awhileD
Bright ecstasy's immortal smileD
I see the flames of war consumeH
Fair scenes that smil'd in glowing bloomH
-
O'er ev'ry nation ev'ry landI
I see destruction wave his handI
How dark thy billows ocean floodJ
Lo man has dy'd thy waves in bloodJ
Nature how chang'd thy vivid graceK
Vengeance and war thy charms defaceK
Oh scene of doubt of care of anguishL
Oh scene where virtue's doom'd to languishL
Oh scene where death triumphant ridesM
The spear the sword the javelin guidesM
And canst thou be that earth declareN
That earth so pure so good so fairN
O'er which a new created globeO
Thy Father spread Perfection's robeO
Oh Heav'n how chang'd how pale how dimP
Since first arose the choral hymnP
That hail'd at thy auspicious birthQ
A dawning Paradise on earthQ
On that sublime creative mornG
That saw the infant planet bornG
-
How swell'd the harp the lyre the voiceR
To bless to triumph to rejoiceR
How kneeling rapture led the songS
How glow'd th' exulting cherub throngS
When the fair orb arising brightT
Sprang into glory life and lightT
Oh Heav'n how chang'd a thorny wasteU
With shadows dimm'd with clouds o'ercastU
See passions desolate the ballD
See kingdoms thrones and empires fallD
See mad Ambition's whirlwind sweepV
Resistless as the wintry deepV
See waving thro' the troubled skyF
His crimson banner glare on highF
Blush Anger blush and hide thy swordU
Weep Conquest weep imperious lordU
And mourn to view thy sullied nameW
Inscrib'd in blood emblaz'd in flameW
And are those cries which rend the airN
Of death of torture of despairN
-
Hymns that should mount on wings aboveX
To him the GOD OF PEACE AND LOVEX
And is yon flame of ruthless warC
That spreads destruction's reign afarY
The incense taught by man to blazeZ
For him who dwells in mercy's raysZ
Mortals if angels grief might knowG
From angels if a tear might flowG
In yon celestial woes might riseA2
And pity dim a seraph's eyesA2
Yet mortals oft thro' mists and tearsB2
Your bright original appearsC2
Gleams thro' the veil with radiant smileD
A sun beam on a ruin'd pileD
Exulting oft the forms I traceK
Of moral grandeur beauty graceK
That speak your pow'rs for glory giv'nG
That still reveal the Heir of Heav'nG
Not yet extinct your heav'nly fireB
For cherubs oft its beams admireA
-
I see fair virtue nobly riseA2
Child fav'rite darling of the skiesA2
Smile on the pangs that round her waitU
And brave and bear the storms of fateU
I see her lift th' adoring eyeF
Forbid the tear suppress the sighF
Still on her high career proceedingD2
Sublime august tho' suff'ring bleedingD2
The thorn tho' sharp the blast tho' rudeU
Shake not her lofty fortitudeU
-
Oh graceful dignity sereneG
Faith glory triumph on thy mienG
Still virtue still the strife maintainG
The smile the frown of fate disdainG
Think on that hour when freed from clayD
Thy soul shall rise to life and dayD
Still mount to heav'n on sorrow's carY
There shine a fix'd unclouded starY
-
Like me to range like me to soarC
Suns planets worlds of light exploreC
Then angel forms around shall throngS
And greet thee in triumphal songS
'Mount spirit mount thy woes are o'erB
Pain sickness trials now no moreC
Hail sister hail thy task is doneG
Rise cherub rise thy crown is won '-
-
Oh favor'd mortals best belov'dU
Ye in stern perils fiercely prov'dU
When faith and truth with pure controlD
Refine inspire exalt your soulD
When firm in brightest noblest aimsE2
Your bosoms glow with hallow'd flamesE2
When still the narrow path you treadU
Nor scorn nor grief nor dangers dreadU
Tho' fate with ev'ry dart assailD
To pierce your heart's heav'n temper'd mailD
-
Nor shrink tho' death his jav'lin hurl'dU
Scorn'd yet untainted by the worldU
Then think ye brave ye constant fewF2
To faith to hope to virtue trueF2
Then think that seraphs from aboveX
Behold your deeds admire and loveX
That those who heav'n's commands performG2
Who still the wave who ride the stormG2
Who point the lightning's fiery wingD2
Or shed the genial dews of springD2
Who fill with balm the zephyr's breathH2
Or taint th' avenging winds with deathH2
That those who guide the planets' courseI2
Who bend at light's transcendent sourceI2
Oh think that those your toil surveyD
Your struggling mind your rugged wayD
Oh think that those e'en now prepareN
A bow'r of bliss for you to shareN
-
E'en now th' immortal wreath entwineG
Around your sainted brows to shineG
E'en now their golden harps attuneG
To greet you in the blaze of noonG
Soon shall your captive souls be freeJ2
To bless to hymn to soar like meJ2
The fair the perfect and the brightU
Shall beam unclouded on your sightU
Soon shall the silver lutes be strungK2
Soon shall the P an lays be sungK2
'Hail sister hail thy task is doneG
Rise cherub rise thy palm is won '-
