The Aged Patriarch Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFG HHII FFJJ FFKL

Of life's past woes the fading traceA
Hath given that aged patriarch's faceA
Expression holy deep resign'dB
The calm sublimity of mindB
-
Years o'er his snowy head have pass'dC
And left him of his race the lastC
Alone on earth but yet his mienD
Is bright with majesty sereneD
-
And those high hopes whose guiding starE
Shines from eternal words afarE
Have with that light illumed his eyeF
Whose fount is immortalityG
-
And o'er his features pour'd a rayH
Of glory not to pass awayH
He seems a being who hath knownI
Communion with his God aloneI
-
On earth by nought but pity's tieF
Detain'd a moment from on highF
One to sublimer worlds alliedJ
One from all passions purifiedJ
-
E'en now half mingled with the skyF
And all prepared oh not to dieF
But like the prophet to aspireK
To Heaven's triumphal car of fireL
