She sat where on each wind that sigh'dA
The citron's breath went byB
While the red gold of eventideA
Burn'd in th' Italian skyB
Her bower was one where daylight's closeC
Full oft sweet laughter foundA
As thence the voice of childhood roseD
To the high vineyards roundA
-
But still and thoughtful at her kneeE
Her children stood that hourF
Their bursts of song and dancing gleeE
Hush'd as by words of powerF
With bright fix'd wondering eyes that gaz'dA
Up to their mother's faceG
With brows thro' parted ringlets rais'dA
They stood in silent graceG
-
While she yet something o'er her lookH
Of mournfulness was spreadA
Forth from a poet's magic bookH
The glorious numbers readA
The proud undying lay which pour'dA
Its light on evil yearsI
His of the gifted pen and swordA
The triumph and the tearsJ
-
She read of fair Erminia's flightA
Which Venice once might hearK
Sung on her glittering seas at nightA
By many a gondolierL
Of him she read who broke the charmM
That wrapt the myrtle groveN
Of Godfrey's deeds of Tancred's armM
That slew his Paynim loveO
-
Young cheeks around that bright page glow'dA
Young holy hearts were stirr'dA
And the meek tears of woman flow'dA
Fast o'er each burning wordA
And sounds of breeze and fount and leafP
Came sweet each pause betweenQ
When a strange voice of sudden griefP
Burst on the gentle sceneQ
-
The mother turn'd a way worn manR
In pilgrim garb stood nighB
Of stately mien yet wild and wanS
Of proud yet mournful eyeB
But drops which would not stay for prideA
From that dark eye gush'd freeE
As pressing his pale brow he criedA
'Forgotten ev'n by theeE
-
'Am I so changed and yet we twoT
Oft hand in hand have play'dA
This brow hath been all bath'd in dewT
From wreaths which thou hast madeA
We have knelt down and said one prayerU
And sung one vesper strainV
My soul is dim with clouds of careU
Tell me those words againW
-
'Life hath been heavy on my headA
I come a stricken deerL
Bearing the heart midst crowds that bledA
To bleed in stillness here '-
She gaz'd till thoughts that long had sleptA
Shook all her thrilling frameX
She fell upon his neck and weptA
Murmuring her brother's nameX
-
Her brother's name and who was heE
The weary one th' unknownY
That came the bitter world to fleeE
A stranger to his ownY
He was the bard of gifts divineZ
To sway the souls of menW
He of the song for Salem's shrineZ
He of the sword and penW
