Our Lady's Well Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEF AAGGHHIIEF JJKKLLMMEF NNOPQQRREFFount of the woods thou art hid no more | A |
From Heaven's clear eye as in time of yore | A |
For the roof hath sunk from thy mossy walls | B |
And the sun's free glance on thy slumber falls | B |
And the dim tree shadows across thee pass | C |
As the boughs are sway'd o'er thy silvery glass | C |
And the reddening leaves to thy breast are blown | D |
When the autumn wind hath a stormy tone | D |
And thy bubbles rise to the flashing rain | E |
Bright Fount thou art nature's own again | F |
- | |
Fount of the vale thou art sought no more | A |
By the pilgrim's foot as in time of yore | A |
When he came from afar his beads to tell | G |
And to chant his hymn at Our Lady's Well | G |
There is heard no Ave through thy bowers | H |
Thou art gleaming lone 'midst thy water flowers | H |
But the herd may drink from thy gushing wave | I |
And there may the reaper his forehead lave | I |
And the woodman seeks thee not in vain | E |
Bright Fount thou art nature's own again | F |
- | |
Fount of the Virgin's ruin'd shrine | J |
A voice that speaks of the past is thine | J |
It mingles the tone of a thoughtful sigh | K |
With the notes that ring through the laughing sky | K |
'Midst the mirthful song of the summer bird | L |
And the sound of the breeze it will yet be heard | L |
Why is it that thus we may gaze on thee | M |
To the brilliant sunshine sparkling free | M |
'Tis that all on earth is of Time's domain | E |
He hath made thee nature's own again | F |
- | |
Fount of the chapel with ages grey | N |
Thou art springing freshly amidst decay | N |
Thy rites are closed and thy cross lies low | O |
And the changeful hours breathe o'er thee now | P |
Yet if at thine altar one holy thought | Q |
In man's deep spirit of old hath wrought | Q |
If peace to the mourner hath here been given | R |
Or prayer from a chasten'd heart to Heaven | R |
Be the spot still hallow'd while Time shall reign | E |
Who hath made thee nature's own again | F |
