OH thou whose pure exalted mindA
Lives in this record fair and brightB
Oh thou whose blameless life combin'dA
Soft female charms and grace refin'dA
With science and with lightB
Celestial maid whose spirit soar'dC
Beyond this vale of tearsD
Whose clear enlighten'd eye explor'dC
The lore of yearsE
-
Daughter of heav'n if here e'en hereF
The wing of tow'ring thought was thineG
If on this dim and mundane sphereH
Fair truth illum'd thy bright careerH
With morning star divineG
-
How must thy blest ethereal soulI
Now kindle in her noon tide rayJ
And hail unfetter'd by controlI
The fount of dayJ
-
E'en now perhaps thy seraph eyesK
Undimm'd by doubt nor veil'd by fearH
Behold a chain of wonders riseK
Gaze on the noon beam of the skiesK
Transcendent pure and clearH
E'en now the fair the good the trueL
From mortal sight conceal'dM
Bless in one blaze thy raptur'd viewL
In light reveal'dM
-
If here the lore of distant timeN
And learning's flow'rs were all thine ownO
How must thy mind ascend sublimeN
Matur'd in heav'n's empyreal climeN
To light's unclouded throneO
-
Perhaps e'en now thy kindling glanceP
Each orb of living fire exploresQ
Darts o'er creation's wide expanseP
Admires adoresQ
-
Oh if that lightning eye surveysR
This dark and sublunary plainS
How must the wreath of human praiseR
Fade wither vanish in thy gazeR
So dim so pale so vainS
-
How like a faint and shadowy dreamN
Must quiver learning's brightest rayJ
While on thine eyes with lucid streamN
The sun of glory pours his beamN
Perfection's dayJ
