He sat in silence on the groundA
The old and haughty CzarB
Lonely tho' princes girt him roundA
And leaders of the warC
He had cast his jewell'd sabreD
That many a field had wonE
To the earth beside his youthful deadF
His fair and first born sonE
-
With a robe of ermine for its bedF
Was laid that form of clayG
Where the light a stormy sunset shedF
Thro' the rich tent made wayG
And a sad and solemn beautyH
On the pallid face came downI
Which the Lord of nations mutely watch'dJ
In the dust with his renownI
-
Low tones at last of wo and fearK
From his full bosom brokeL
A mournful thing it was to hearM
How then the proud man spokeL
The voice that thro' the combatN
Had shouted far and highO
Came forth in strange dull hollow tonesP
Burden'd with agonyH
-
'There is no crimson on thy cheekQ
And on thy lip no breathR
I call thee and thou dost not speakQ
They tell me this is deathR
And fearful things are whisperingS
That I the deed have doneE
For the honour of thy father's nameT
Look up look up my sonE
-
'Well might I know death's hue and mienU
But on thine aspect boyV
What till this moment have I seenU
Save pride and tameless joyV
Swiftest thou wert to battleW
And bravest there of allX
How could I think a warrior's frameT
Thus like a flower should fallX
-
'I will not bear that still cold lookY
Rise up thou fierce and freeH
Wake as the storm wakes I will brookY
All save this calm from theeH
Lift brightly up and proudlyH
Once more thy kindling eyesZ
Hath my word lost its power on earthA2
I say to thee ariseZ
-
'Didst thou not know I lov'd thee wellB2
Thou didst not and art goneC2
In bitterness of soul to dwellB2
Where man must dwell aloneD2
Come back young fiery spiritE2
If but one hour to learnF2
The secrets of the folded heartG2
That seem'd to thee so sternF2
-
'Thou wert the first the first fair childH2
That in mine arms I press'dI2
Thou wert the bright one that hast smil'dH2
Like summer on my breastI2
I rear'd thee as an eagleW
To the chase thy steps I ledF
I bore thee on my battle horseJ2
I look upon thee deadF
-
'Lay down my warlike banners hereM
Never again to waveK2
And bury my red sword and spearK
Chiefs in my first born's graveK2
And leave me I have conquer'dL2
I have slain my work is doneE
Whom have I slain ye answer notM2
Thou too art mute my son '-
-
And thus his wild lament was pour'dN2
Thro' the dark resounding nightO2
And the battle knew no more his swordN2
Nor the foaming steed his mightO2
He heard strange voices moaningS
In every wind that sigh'dP2
From the searching stars of heaven he shrankQ2
Humbly the conqueror diedP2
