In the deep hour of dreamsA
Through the dark woods and past the moaning seaB
And by the star light gleamsA
Mother of sorrows lo I come to theeB
-
Unto thy shrine I bearC
Night blowing flowers like my own heart to lieD
All all unfolded thereC
Beneath the meekness of thy pitying eyeD
-
For thou that once didst moveE
In thy still beauty through an early homeF
Thou knowest the grief the loveG
The fear of woman's soul to thee I comeH
-
Many and sad and deepI
Were the thoughts folded in thy silent breastJ
Thou too couldst watch and weepI
Hear gentlest mother hear a heart oppressedJ
-
There is a wandering barkK
Bearing one from me o'er the restless waveL
Oh let thy soft eye markK
His course be with him holiest guide and saveL
-
My soul is on that wayM
My thoughts are travellers o'er the waters dimN
Through the long weary dayM
I walk o'ershadowed by vain dreams of himN
-
Aid him and me too aidO
Oh 'tis not well this earthly love's excessP
On thy weak child is laidO
The burden of too deep a tendernessQ
-
Too much o'erR
himN
is pouredS
My being's hope scarce leaving Heaven a partT
Too faithfully adoredS
Oh make not him the chastener of my heartT
-
I tremble with a senseU
Of grief to be I hear a warming lowV
Sweet mother call me henceU
This wild idolatry must end in woeV
-
The troubled joy of lifeW
Love's lightning happiness my soul hath knownX
And worn with feverish strifeW
Would fold its wings take back take back thine ownX
-
Hark how the wind swept byD
The tempest's voice comes rolling o'er the waveL
Hope of the sailor's eyeD
And maiden's heart blest mother guide and saveL
