Hymn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAABCDCED FFGHHG IIJJAABKBBL AAMM NNOOIICCPP

OH Thou before whose radiant shrineA
Entranc'd adoring seraphs bendB
Eternal source of light divineA
Wilt Thou thy hallow'd ear inclineA
And mortal pray'r attendB
Yes Father yes benignant Pow'rC
Around Thee beams fair Mercy's purest rayD
No awful terrors round Thee low'rC
Save when in Judgment's dreaded hourE
Thou bidst Creation tremble and obeyD
-
Then rob'd in darkness and in cloudsF
That solemn veil thy glory shroudsF
Chaos and night thy dark pavilion formG
Thy spirit on the whirlwind ridesH
Impels the unresisting tidesH
Glares in the lightning rushes in the stormG
-
But Thou wilt meet the suppliant eyeI
And Thou wilt mark the lowly sighI
And Thou the holy tear wilt seeJ
Which penitence devotes to TheeJ
That sigh thy breezes waft to heav'nA
That holy tear is grateful incense giv'nA
Low humble sad to Thee I bendB
Oh listen from thy blest abodeK
And though celestial hymns ascendB
Oh deign a mortal's prayer attendB
My Father and my GODL
-
Teach me if hope if joy be mineA
To bless thy bounteous hand divineA
And still with trembling homage raiseM
The grateful p an of exalted praiseM
-
When deep affliction wounds my soulN
Still let me own thy mild controlN
Teach me submissive and resign'dO
To calm the tempest of the mindO
To lift the meek adoring eyeI
Suppress the tear and hush the sighI
Gaze on one bright unclouded starC
And hail 'the day spring' from afarC
Bid angel faith dispel surrounding gloomP
And soar on cherub wing beyond the tombP
