Dark lowers our fateA
And terrible the storm that gathers o'er usB
But nothing till that latest agonyC
Which severs thee from nature shall unlooseB
This fix'd and sacred hold In thy dark prison houseB
In the terrific face of armed lawD
Yea on the scaffold if it needs must beC
I never will forsake theeC
-
Joanna BaillieC
-
HER hands were clasp'd her dark eyes rais'dE
The breeze threw back her hairF
Up to the fearful wheel she gaz'dE
All that she lov'd was thereF
-
The night was round her clear and coldG
The holy heaven aboveH
Its pale stars watching to beholdG
The might of earthly loveH
-
'And bid me not depart ' she criedI
'My Rudolph say not soB
This is no time to quit thy sideI
Peace peace I cannot goB
-
Hath the world aught for me to fearJ
When death is on thy browK
The world what means it mine is hereL
I will not leave thee nowK
-
'I have been with thee in thine hourM
Of glory and of blissB
Doubt not its memory's living powerM
To strengthen me thro' thisB
-
And thou mine honour'd love and trueN
Bear on bear nobly onO
We have the blessed heaven in viewN
Whose rest shall soon be won '-
-
And were not these high words to flowB
From woman's breaking heartP
Thro' all that night of bitterest woeB
She bore her lofty partP
-
But oh with such a glazing eyeQ
With such a curdling cheekR
Love love of mortal agonyC
Thou only thou should'st speakR
-
The wind rose high but with it roseB
Her voice that he might hearL
Perchance that dark hour brought reposeB
To happy bosoms nearJ
-
While she sat striving with despairF
Beside his tortured formS
And pouring her deep soul in prayerF
Forth on the rushing stormS
-
She wiped the death damps from his browK
With her pale hands and softT
Whose touch upon the lute chords lowB
Had still'd his heart so oftU
-
She spread her mantle o'er his breastV
She bath'd his lips with dewN
And on his cheek such kisses press'dV
As hope and joy ne'er knewN
-
Oh lovely are ye Love and FaithW
Enduring to the lastX
She had her meed one smile in deathY
And his worn spirit pass'dX
-
While ev'n as o'er a martyr's graveZ
She knelt on that sad spotA2
And weeping bless'd the God who gaveZ
Strength to forsake it notA2
