Wouldst thou wear the gift of immortal bloomA
Wouldst thou smile in scorn at the shadowy tombA
Drink of this cup it is richly fraughtB
With balm from the gardens of genii broughtB
Drink and the spoiler shall pass thee byC
When the young all scatter'd like rose leaves lieC
-
And would not the youth of my soul be goneD
If the lov'd had left me one by oneE
Take back the cup that may never blessF
The gift that would make me brotherlessF
How should I live with no kindred eyeC
To reflect mine immortalityG
-
Wouldst thou have empire by sign or spellH
Over the mighty in air that dwellH
Wouldst thou call the spirits of shore and steepI
To fetch thee jewels from ocean's deepI
Wave but this rod and a viewless bandJ
Slaves to thy will shall around thee standJ
-
And would not fear at my coming thenK
Hush every voice in the homes of menK
Would not bright eyes in my presence quailL
Young cheeks with a nameless thrill turn paleL
No gift be mine that aside would turnM
The human love for whose founts I yearnM
-
Wouldst thou then read thro' the hearts of thoseF
Upon whose faith thou hast sought reposeF
Wear this rich gem it is charm'd to showN
When a change comes over affection's glowN
Look on its flushing or fading hueO
And learn if the trusted be false or trueO
-
Keep keep the gem that I still may trustP
Tho' my heart's wealth be but pour'd on dustP
Let not a doubt in my soul have placeF
To dim the light of a lov'd one's faceF
Leave to the earth its warm sunny smileQ
That glory would pass could I look on guileQ
-
Say then what boon of my power shall beG
Favour'd of spirits pour'd forth on theeG
Thou scornest the treasures of wave and mineR
Thou wilt not drink of the cup divineR
Thou art fain with a mortal's lot to restS
Answer me how may I grace it bestS
-
Oh give me no sway o'er the powers unseenT
But a human heart where my own may leanT
A friend one tender and faithful friendU
Whose thoughts' free current with mine may blendU
And leaving not either on earth aloneV
Bid the bright calm close of our lives be oneE
