Too long have Tyranny and Power combinedA
To sway with iron sceptre o'er mankindA
Long has Oppression worn th' imperial robeB
And Rapine's sword has wasted half the globeB
O'er Europe's cultured realms and climes afarC
Triumphant Gaul has pour'd the tide of warD
To her fair Austria veil'd the standard brightE
Ausonia's lovely plains have own'd her mightE
While Prussia's eagle never taught to yieldF
Forsook her tow'ring height on Jena's fieldF
-
Oh gallant Fred'ric could thy parted shadeG
Have seen thy country vanquish'd and betray'dG
How had thy soul indignant mourn'd her shameH
Her sullied trophies and her tarnish'd fameH
When Valour wept lamented BRUNSWlCK's doomI
And nursed with tears the laurels on his tombI
When Prussia drooping o'er her hero's graveJ
Invoked his spirit to descend and saveJ
Then set her glories then expired her sunK
And fraud achieved e'en more than conquest wonK
-
O'er peaceful realms that smiled with plenty gayL
Has desolation spread her ample swayL
Thy blast oh Ruin on tremendous wingsM
Has proudly swept o'er empires nations kingsM
Thus the wild hurricane's impetuous forceN
With dark destruction marks its whelming courseN
Despoils the woodland's pomp the blooming plainO
Death on its pinion vengeance in its trainO
Rise Freedom rise and breaking from thy tranceP
Wave the dread banner seize the glittering lanceP
With arm of might assert thy sacred causeQ
And call thy champions to defend thy lawsR
How long shall tyrant power her throne maintainO
How long shall despots and usurpers reignO
Is honour's lofty soul for ever fledS
Is virtue lost is martial ardour deadS
Is there no heart where worth and valour dwellT
No patriot WALLACE no undaunted TELLT
Yes Freedom yes thy sons a noble bandU
Around thy banner firm exulting standU
Once more 'tis thine invincible to wieldF
The beamy spear and adamantine shieldF
Again thy cheek with proud resentment glowsV
Again thy lion glance appals thy foesV
Thy kindling eye beam darts unconquer'd firesW
Thy look sublime the warrior's heart inspiresX
And while to guard thy standard and thy rightE
Castilians rush intrepid to the fightE
Lo Britain's generous host their aid supplyY
Resolved for thee to triumph or to dieY
And glory smiles to see Iberia's nameH
Enroll'd with Albion's in the book of fameH
-
Illustrious names still still united beamZ
Be still the hero's boast the poet's themeZ
So when two radiant gems together shineA2
And in one wreath their lucid light combineA2
Each as it sparkles with transcendant raysB2
Adds to the lustre of its kindred blazeB2
-
Descend oh Genius from thy orb descendC2
Thy glowing thought thy kindling spirit lendC2
As Memnon's harp so ancient fables sayL
With sweet vibration meets the morning rayL
So let the chords thy heavenly presence ownD2
And swell a louder note a nobler toneD2
Call from the sun her burning throne on highY
The seraph Ecstacy with lightning eyeY
Steal from the source of day empyreal fireE2
And breathe the soul of rapture o'er the lyreF2
-
Hail Albion hail thou land of freedom's birthG2
Pride of the main and Phoenix of the earthG2
Thou second Rome where mercy justice dwellT
Whose sons in wisdom as in arms excelT
Thine are the dauntless bands like Spartans braveJ
Bold in the field triumphant on the waveJ
In classic elegance and arts divineA2
To rival Athens' fairest palm is thineA2
For taste and fancy from Hymettus flyY
And richer bloom beneath thy varying skyY
Where Science mounts in radiant car sublimeH2
To other worlds beyond the sphere of timeH2
Hail Albion hail to thee has fate deniedI2
Peruvian mines and rich Hindostan's prideI2
The gems that Ormuz and Golconda boastJ2
And all the wealth of Montezuma's coastJ2
For thee no Parian marbles brightly shineA2
No glowing suns mature the blushing vineA2
No light Arabian gales their wings expandU
To waft Sab an incense o'er the landU
No graceful cedars crown thy lofty hillsK2
No trickling myrrh for thee its balm distilsK2
Not from thy trees the lucid amber flowsK2
And far from thee the scented cassia blowsK2
Yet fearless Commerce pillar of thy throneD2
Makes all the wealth of foreign climes thy ownD2
From Lapland's shore to Afric's fervid reignO
She bids thy ensigns float above the mainO
Unfurls her streamers to the favouring galeL2
And shows to other worlds her daring sailL2
Then wafts their gold their varied stores to theeM2
Queen of the trident empress of the seaM2
-
For this thy noble sons have spread alarmsK2
And bade the zones resound with Britain's armsK2
Calp 's proud rock and Syria's palmy shoreD
Have heard and trembled at their battle's roarD
The sacred waves of fertilizing NileN2
Have seen the triumphs of the conquering isleN2
For this for this the Samiel blast of warD
Has roll'd o'er Vincent's cape and TrafalgarE2
Victorious RODNEY spread thy thunder's soundO2
And NELSON fell with fame immortal crown'dO2
Blest if their perils and their blood could gainO
To grace thy hand the sceptre of the mainO
The milder emblems of the virtues calmP2
The poet's verdant bay the sage's palmP2
These in thy laurel's blooming foliage twineA2
And round thy brows a deathless wreath combineA2
Not Mincio's banks nor Meles' classic tideI2
Are hallow'd more than Avon's haunted sideI2
Nor is thy Thames a less inspiring themeZ
Than pure Ilissus or than Tiber's streamZ
-
Bright in the annals of th' impartial pageQ2
Britannia's heroes live from age to ageQ2
From ancient days when dwelt her savage raceK2
Her painted natives foremost in the chaseK2
Free from all cares for luxury or gainO
Lords of the wood and monarchs of the plainO
To these Augustan days when social artsK2
Refine and meliorate her manly heartsK2
From doubtful Arthur hero of romanceK2
King of the circled board the spear the lanceK2
To those whose recent trophies grace her shieldF
The gallant victors of Vimiera's fieldF
Still have her warriors borne th' unfading crownR2
And made the British Flag the ensign of renownR2
-
Spirit of ALFRED patriot soul sublimeH2
Thou morning star of error's darkest timeH2
Prince of the lion heart whose arm in fightE
On Syria's plains repell'd Saladin's mightE
EDWARD for bright heroic deeds reveredS2
By Cressy's fame to Britain still endear'dT2
Triumphant Henry thou whose valour proudU2
The lofty plume of crested Gallia bow'dU2
Look down look down exalted Shades and viewV2
Your Albion still to freedom's banner trueV2
Behold the land ennobled by your fameH
Supreme in glory and of spotless nameH
And as the pyramid indignant rearsK2
Its awful head and mocks the waste of yearsK2
See her secure in pride of virtue towerE2
While prostrate nations kiss the rod of powerE2
-
Lo where her pennons waving high aspireF2
Bold victory hovers near 'with eyes of fire '-
While Lusitania hails with just applauseK2
The brave defenders of her injured causeK2
Bids the full song the note of triumph riseK2
And swells th' exulting p an to the skiesK2
-
And they who late with anguish hard to tellT
Breathed to their cherish'd realms a sad farewellT
Who as the vessel bore them o'er the tideI2
Still fondly linger'd on its deck and sigh'dI2
Gazed on the shore till tears obscured their sightE
And the blue distance melted into lightE
The Royal Exiles forced by Gallia's hateW2
To fly for refuge in a foreign stateW2
They soon returning o'er the western mainO
Ere long may view their clime beloved againX2
And as the blazing pillar led the hostJ2
Of faithful Israel o'er the desert coastJ2
So may Britannia guide the noble bandU
O'er the wild ocean to their native landU
Oh glorious isle O sovereign of the wavesK2
Thine are the sons who 'never will be slaves '-
See them once more with ardent hearts advanceK2
And rend the laurels of insulting FranceK2
To brave Castile their potent aid supplyY
And wave oh Freedom wave thy sword on highY
-
Is there no bard of heavenly power posses'dU
To thrill to rouse to animate the breastU
Like Shakespeare o'er the secret mind to swayL
And call each wayward passion to obeyL
Is there no barC
