DAUGHTER of th' Italian heavenA
Thou to whom its fires are givenA
Joyously thy car hath roll'dB
Where the conqueror's pass'd of oldB
And the festal sun that shoneC
O'er three hundred triumphs goneD
Makes thy day of glory brightE
With a shower of golden lightE
-
Now thou tread'st th' ascending roadF
Freedom's foot so proudly trodeF
While from tombs of heroes borneG
From the dust of empire shornG
Flowers upon thy graceful headF
Chaplets of all hues are shedF
In a soft and rosy rainH
Touch'd with many a gem like stainH
-
Thou hast gain'd the summit nowI
Music hails thee from belowJ
Music whose rich notes might stirK
Ashes of the sepulchreK
Shaking with victorious notesL
All the bright air as it floatsL
Well may woman's heart beat highM
Unto that proud harmonyN
-
Now afar it rolls it diesO
And thy voice is heard to riseO
With a low and lovely toneC
In its thrilling power aloneC
And thy lyre's deep silvery stringP
Touched as by a breeze's wingP
Murmurs tremblingly at firstF
Ere the tide of rapture burstF
-
All the spirit of thy skyM
Now hath lit thy large dark eyeM
And thy cheek a flush hath caughtF
From the joy of kindled thoughtF
And the burning words of songQ
From thy lip flow fast and strongQ
With a rushing stream's delightF
In the freedom of its mightF
-
Radiant daughter of the sunA
Now thy living wreath is wonA
Crown'd of Rome Oh art thou notF
Happy in that glorious lotF
Happier happier far than thouI
With the laurel on thy browI
She that makes the humblest hearthR
Lovely but to one on earthS
